Title: Coil upgrade on ACE 250
Post by: preprobono on September 29, 2013, 09:42:30 PM
I recently got into detecting thanks to my brother probono.
The ACE 250 has found me quite a lot of stuff with it's little coil but nothing compared to my brother's Minelab with it's 13" Ultimate coil.
So regardless of the jibes about coil envy I decided to upgrade and managed to secure a used 12" x 13" NEL Tornado coil.
Today was it's first outing and it didn't disappoint.
We went to a couple of fields that we've been over before and where the ACE was really out performed by the Minelab with it's big coil.
This time the ACE was finding things that the Minelab had been over before.
The good thing is that I got to feel confident with the coil very quickly and had a haul of stuff that I just wouldn't have found with the little coil.
So on the strength of a single outing of around 4 hours I have to say it was a significant improvement and worthwhile investment.

Nice to hear someone else singing the praises of the NEL coil. I've got two, the little Sharp-shooter (fantastic) and the bigger Hunter. I think they are very good coils, all I need is some equally good ground to cover. ::)

Well,

two bullets (copper ones)
1 George V penny
2 George V/I 1/2d
3 new half pennies
1 brasss 3d

loads of modern 4 hole buttons

2 nicer buttons - one of which is I think earlier (but I would like some help with that - buttons really aren't my field!)

Probably should have added the pictures:-

The second button is cast in one piece, and almost 1cm thick.

I have long held the view that little brother has pockets like the prisoners on The Great Escape. So when he's being out-detected he releases the string and coins roll out of his pocket and down his trouser leg.

The top button is a General Service button. Not sure but think they dated from 1870-1901.

The GS button has the Kings crown and so is probably WWI, as most are, GS buttons stayed in service until around 1924 Wink

Thanks - any idea on the other button. It's of solid, single-piece construction (even the loop is of the same cast) and is about 1cm thick - the loop is quite chunky too) - I thought it might be 17th century.
