Since 1816 we have had a token coinage. Although in this case it was also a token rather than a coin because it wasn't struck for the royal mint - a bit like the later Bank Tokens of 1811-1816 (it's a bit akin to the current situation where Scottish Bank notes are not legal tender, whereas Bank of England ones are).
