Title: The finds! Post by: NickDavies on August 15, 2013, 10:57:17 AM Since i've started metal detecting i've always wondered what to do if i found something of significant importance, something like a hoard or things classed as treasure! I have yet to find such things but would be nice to be prepared if that day may come!
Things i want to know... 1- Do you leave the items in the ground? 2- Who do you contact? The procedure? 3- What happens after it? That hoard you find belongs to my ancestors so just send it here 8) Look at the portable antiquities scheme and the treasure act 1996 and a useful guide to detecting beaches is under "beach detecting" in the forum where you can instantly download and print your foreshore licence. If you found a hoard that isn't scattered you should leave it in the ground to be excavated under controlled conditions. It's quite possible if you find a hoard it might be scattered - and it's possible that you might find the top portion of a hoard that's been scattered and then you find the 'pot' - in this case you should leave the pot when you have found it to excavated. I think you have two weeks to inform the FLO / coroner (sometimes you will have to inform the coroner yourself, sometimes the FLO will do it for you). Then after you've handed what you have found in, you wait for a few years. In the case of a confined hoard the rest will be excavated promptly - in the case of a scattered hoard, it might be dug it might not be. Title: Re: The finds! Post by: cardiffian on August 25, 2013, 11:08:10 PM If you find an item of Treasure you have 14 days (from the time you realise it is Treasure) to report it to the coroner. The reporting of the find is the important bit. As long as the reporting requirements have been met, there is some flexibility with the handing in of the find. It is usually the case that you can hand in the find after you have shown it at your club meeting(s). Make sure you get a receipt when you hand the find in. If the find may be valuable, use the time to get some independent valuations and photographs done. You will need to have such supporting evidence if you challenge any subsequent valuation set by the TVC. As Probono said, expect it to take years to reach a conclusion (even when the item is disclaimed).
