Being a bit thick thought I would ask, how do you all determine a site or new farm to try getting permissions for???? I am surrounded by farms! Thanks in advance ??? Title: Re: new places to try?? Research is all well and good but one lesson I've learned is that just because you know there was something there don't mean you'll find anything. And vice versa. Val Title: Re: new places to try?? Post by: Chef Geoff on August 02, 2013, 09:48:43 AM Good advice by Val there Brisad. 99.9% of the the items we find whether coins or artefacts have been lost spread or thrown-away and this can and does happen anywhere. These actions don't generally happen on a habitation site, so you may find a Romano British settlement but you'll find very little "on" it, though 100 meters away may have been where the midden was or the fields where they spent there time working and that is where the finds would be.
Granted there are areas of land such as pre-wooded or reclaimed flood plain where the footfall through history will be far less and therefore the chance of potential losses is that much lower. Nearly every field will produce something be it only modern and you can do as much research as you like to increase the odds of finding that special something but at the end of the day if you know your machine then it's a numbers game, the more yards or even miles you cover the greater the chances of finding ;) Title: Re: new places to try?? When I first started detecting I detected a field through a friend which we latter found out had a Roman Fortlet on it. We found Zilch. Bought a new arm cup for me detector and tried it in our paddock which has been trashed when the Bungalow was built and can't stop finding things. No research needed.

I have just been chatting with my son and found out he "found" a detector in the boot of a car whem he worked in an "end of life" car breakers ;D he remembers detecting with me a boy. We have decided to have a root around Glyn Ceriog together soon, the only difference will be aware of a finds value :( I will keep you all posted as I have yet to try my mucho cheapo detector on which I have never used but having looked at ebay, detector sites and the shops I am blinded by all the science so will do what I always did.......... Dig everything and have you seen the price of aluminium nowadays! ;D |
