Anyone know if these machines are still serviceable?

Got the chance to buy a cheap CZ-5 but seller says it needs a tune up?

Hello Dusty, get your CZ-5 up and running properly and you won't be sorry you bought it. I had a CZ-6 for many years, which was identical to the CZ-5, but had better waterproofing properties. Nearly all my best finds have been found in tidal estuaries at low tides and the CZ-6 was responsible.
Discriminate out small iron and dig everything else.
Suggest you get a new nut that allows you to adjust the length of the shaft, as this item breaks regularly, usually after about 12 months.

The  technology in the  CZ-5  is over 20 years old  and I would not pay more than  £130  for a good example.  £400  for  a detector  that is not in perfect working order is madness,  but you  knew that  already.

I think £250 is the going rate for a good one in a private sale, closer to £300 retail but £400, the guy must of had his tongue well and truly in his cheek ;)

He was deadly serious... collectors item etc.

I know the CZ range look ugly as a pig but I quite like them and with my slim budget its either a CZ or XLT.

I too like the CZ look and they are nice machines. It's all very well saying "collectors item" but I'm not aware that there are that many collectors ???

Too true Geoff. From what I've seen they are underestimated and often overlooked as a choice. And when you consider its 20 year old technology and still able to pull coins at depth it makes me think why not, give the old gal a go. Its been said a number of times on US websites that it can match the F75, but the downside is its love for deep nails.

All VLF motion machines are using 40 year old technology, they knew it was a dead end system when it was developed. New processors are all that's changed since then. The Compass machines are another make that will still hold their own but as you say the accursed iron is their downfall :-\

That's interesting. I suppose with that comes better iron discrimination... Been in touch with Dave at Pentechnic for a price on a service/tune, getting ready to brace myself  :o

Agree with Jonty,
I bought a CZ6 New some 21 years ago and have been using it as my main detector up until April this year. Never in that time have I had a problem with it, having been out in all weathers.
Been at numerous digs where other m/c's have packed in due to getting waterlogged and the old CZ just kept plodding on.
Just bought a CTX & am hoping it will stand up just as well  :)  & I'm now holding on to the CZ6 as a back up machine.(won't part with it )
It;s certainly a great machine for the wet sand,  You won't regret it if you get one ;D
