1601, james v1 of scotland£6 gold piece equal to 10 shilligns in england, he became james the first of england in 1603, the story goes he brought chests of gold and silver coins down from scotland with him he sent his servant out with a gold coin, to get  maybe  a indian and a few cans, but the shop keeper said i don t now what this coin is worth so he refused to sell him anything on becoming king  he made nknown the rate of exchange between the currency, found on the same farm as my ring i was talking to the farmers wife, thinking which field to do nexrt she said at the back of the house is an old trail down the bank , after a few hoursat the bottom signal shotgun, signal the above  there is one found in a hoard in the welsh museum,ps. another visit, gold guinea found 20 ft from this coin but not by mehad a great month 2 years ago 3 gold coins two half sovereigns ring and hammered, not a sniff of gold since maybe the golr roman one day, and pre 1947 halfcrown  regards john

last one have lots more, 1st cent roman cavalry mount found in vale of glam,  the reason for these posts is to say that there are still plenty of great finds in wales i do a lot of walking, and just now and again that field of gold turns up we have land in england, and i like to do an odd english, rally, but  i  get more satisfaction , finding things in wales, than travelling every week hundreds of miles to a fixed location for a days decting, at least i can enjoy the scenery, wildlife and dect at my own pace, and can go back as often as i like regards john thats all folks thanks for your kind comments  have a great year regards ohn pugh

According to Bishop 1988 the average height of a Roman Cavalry horse was 14 hands. Quoted in the book THE ROMAN CAVALRY, Dixon and Southern. Although 10 to 15 hands was the range of excavated horses. At Krefeld 31 horses were excavated, two from 11 to 12 hands and the rest from 12 to 15.2 hands.

Do you take pot luck or do you try and research prospective farm sites to detect on ?

For the majority of tectors on hill farms, you can walk all day and only find buttons and buckles lol ;D

hi hedgehog, , your probably right , but what i m trying to do is  build a picture of finds in wales for myself to remember, and to show what can be found in wales, if people are interested. outlaw, its a mixture of both, at this present moment i research possible sites, but  even then, you can only try new land, i walked miles, with very little to show, but just now and then ,you find that field of dreams. its just down to thinking where ancient man lived and meet, the piece in the centre of the grot coins cleaned up well and is a 2nd cent  roman strap end best regards john

hi hedgehog, in answer to how much rubbish, if you mean foil pull tabs foil, not to much, as most of our land is very rural, do have lots of georgian / vicky coins had 16  yesterday, tried two new fields in rural fields right by old church, going back tomorrow, took camera, forgot batteries,, even decrt, in small river, found buckle and vici penny,  had like new 1923 florin, two in week ::) lthanks for all the kind comments, mole your not doing any wrong finding silver joeys, but you have to keep going research new land sites, phil and have hundreds of farms but we are always looking  and trying for new places wales is a big place, but there are still fields of dreams there to find regards john

Nice finds John, think the local badgers will be employing you with a hole that deep.
Now you are going to be peed off, I don't think it's a Roman horse shoe, looks like a relatively modern one, when they got stuck in the boggy ground I would assume that the shoe got sucked off as it pulled it's hoof out.
There doesn't seem to be much evidence of horse shoes other than the rare occasions a hipposandal turns up!

By the design it is quite modern John, the weight of the horse in wet ground would push them down to that depth, I did my homework on horseshoes once because I was digging some odd ones up, They are identifiable by the design and shape of the shoe, the one you have found looks 20th century I'm afraid.
Here is a link to some post medieval ones there are others in other categories but have a look!

Definitely no Roman there John  :-[ I think you talk the denarii out of the ground. Good news on the buckle, I think it's 1250-1350, have a look at the link and see what you think.

hi out today lou and i, a sad day for me i returned to my field of dreams  in wales at the invite of the archoligists, who have taken over my site, it is now a scheduled field forever in the time i decteted it  i amassed  a tremendous amount of roman,  roman brit , iron bronze age artifacts which has been with the welsh museum for almost a year, the amount of items found has made this field quate from archi, probably the most important collection of finds in britian, if not internationaly,  from one field in wales, not  so much for the value but so many rare items, there  are more digs to be done, in the following months i hope i get an invite back  . all artifacts have with the farmer and me been donated to the welsh museum, after studying cleaning it will be passed on to another museum for display forever probablly two years, time i ve lost the farm now but have no regrets to be part of making history for wales is its own reward oh plus 52 denari i keeped ::) a small start on photo of one dig pictures artifacts to come with the help of mark lodwick i hope over the next months to build a picture of my finds to share with anybody interested

hi lou and i out today, we got permission from dean to do a cathedral,  its on ,top of a older monastry. the day started well, the dean asked us to locate a house key, he had lost, lou found it in two minutes flat, holy intervention ::) its a massive place we didn t find much old at present but masses of targets, and great laugh best find medieval lead weight and silver childs bracelet,we found £2 cash and i said to lou see if you can spend them in the cathedral cafe, he came back with flap jacks  which he paid for himself ,and put the money we found in the collection box, trust him, anyway lou had a easy day , he never stops calling me squirell after my raids on his chocalate, i call him fu--face in return but couldn t swear at him because of holy ground ;D looks very promising there i smell gold regards john
