Title: Sir Baldrick aka Tony Robinson
Post by: cardiffian on June 15, 2013, 08:43:23 AM
Tony Robinson and Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder Goes Forth

This year's list of honours to mark the Queen's official birthday includes awards for two stars from one of the UK's best-loved comedies.

Tony Robinson, who played Baldrick in the 1980s TV comedy series Blackadder, has been given a knighthood, while Rowan Atkinson, who played the eponymous hero, has been awarded a CBE.

Sir Tony's award has been made in recognition of his public and political service. He said: "I'm thrilled, flattered and a little gob-smacked to have received this recognition from my country. I'll use my new title with abandon to highlight the causes I believe in, particularly the importance of culture, the arts and heritage in our society, and the plight of the infirm elderly and their carers.

"I also pledge that from this day on I'll slaughter all unruly dragons, and rescue any damsels in distress who request my help."

Rowan Atkinson said his CBE "came as a genuine surprise and is a great honour."

He must have done something else to deserve it ?

bizarre nomination , there must be 1000s of more deserving people in public office who have done more.
Mr Bean has promoted britishness all over the world so the whole thing is very strange .
just brings the knighthoods into disrepute  ???

makes you wonder if he was nominated by the royal family as 1 of their favorites so they couldnt refuse the nomination .they just happen to like the Baldrick character
so he had to become a sir

Sir Tony Robinson?  ;D

It's a joke, surely?

The mans a blithering idiot. Just demeans the whole honours system.

I think Rowan Atkinson is more deserving....and he's known the world over.

And Adele!

Ok she's a good singer, but has only been in the public eye for a mere blink.

I think you'll find that while Rowan Atkinson has been more financially successful his career on and off screen/stage pales in comparison to Tony Robinsons.

apart from being on T.V  or singing or riding a bike what have these people done to
deserve Knighthoods. These awards should be given for bravery in action and the likes.
O.k give the O.B.E. etc for lesser things to show recognition, but Knighthoods no way

That's why we have medals ;) Unfortunately Generals get the knighthoods but the lads who do the dirty work just get a medal :-\

Talking of medals, I had the T.V. on in the back ground but wasn't actually watching. It was a program about the lost film footage of the Vietnam war. They were saying about how those who survived were all awarded a bronze medal and as soon as the ceremony was over they threw them away in disgust.

looking at his wiki page nothing so remarkable so as to warrant a knighthood when compared to other Sirs .

Iam rerluctant to say this ,as no programme outside of sky has publicised the hobby of metal detecting in way time team has...We hear the Arkies on the Time Team saying that detectorists remove artefacts out of context (while standing next to a J.C.B..LOL) But the general public i talk to ,who watch this programme are very much in favour of our hobby..As for his title ,i think there is more worthy people in the queue for a gong ???

I wonder if he hadn't expressed an ant-detecting view whether this thread would even exist ??? And his "detectorists cause damage by removing artefacts out of context" is I'm afraid totally true.
The whole thread smells of

i dont think its sour grapes more a case of fairness that the recipient is worthy of the award ,which he clearly is not.
other sirs are professors that made important discoveries that benefited mankind or VIPs of global renown .
can you compare tony robinson  with sir elton john or sir mick jagger ?no
once on a time team prog i had a chat with the gent and hes a reasonable bloke ,caught him reading the Sun

when you scan the list of Sirs going back many years you admire them for being so impressive at what they did ,and say to yourself 'well done my lads' you deserve your knighthood for exemplary service to the realm , but in all honesty i cant say that with old Baldrick. he isnt a Ralph Richardson or a John Gielgud ,he is a nobody who suddenly got very lucky ..
like trevor philips actually .
thanks for the mods for allowing this discussion ,we need some human interest around here too y'know...
