Title: Weird or What
Post by: Val Beechey on March 30, 2013, 09:01:57 PM
Just one of the weird and wonderful objects I've dug up over the last few afternoons. ::)

I thought it might fire your imaginations to give me some ideas. It's iron and the centre part is 3in long and 1 1/2 in wide.

Not really Glynkid. It's red rust all over. I have an idea about it but wondered if anyone else might say the same.

If it has a flat back it looks a little like an old  coat hanger.

could  the item be that is on the end of the chains that are inside the muck spreading machines that farmers use the item I mention is used to pull the old bedding out off the tank spreader fixed onto short pieces of chain to A rotating boom that goes the length of the spreader  the spreader is not the one used for slurry, but old beading of manure heaps  ???

Congerman, Very close to what we thought. As it had an attachment at all 4 corners, we figured it must be something flat. A harrow was what came to mind but I must admit that diamond shape is a new one to me.
I think I found the remains of the old barn. All sorts have come up in a very small area, marked clearly as a bare, roughly  square patch in the field were nothing is growing. I found the remains of the house/cottage 2 fields away.
Date wise, early 1800's.

Hi guys
Looks like it could top part of a pig trough.
The trough would have been round and it would have four bars dividing the sections and they would all meet in the middle and that's the bit you got.....I put round in"round iron pig trough" in google images and there are similar ones but not as old as yours....but of course I can't be sure?
Happy hunting!

Well, one of lifes' little mysteries is going to remain so. I've just been to see an old farm hand to see if he knows what it is. He doesn't  :-\
It can't be off anything mechanical because of the age, it wasn't found by any water, so who knows. The nearest farm goes way back, at least to the early 1700's, I'm fairly certain I've got a William 3rd half penny off one of the fields.
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions and thanks for the compliment on nails Paul. It can join the round thingy on the window ledge. Good talking point for visitors.

I said it would be a good talking point for visitors.  This one recognised exactly what it is. He collects old farm implements and has the complete thing.

It's off a harrow.  Mystery solved. ;D
