Title: Georgian (not cap badge) military hat/helmet insignia for the Somerset Volunteer
Post by: Zeus (Joel) on March 25, 2013, 10:23:10 AM
The coat of arms is that of Wells - a cathedral city

In that case it might be for either the 10th Somerset RVC formed in 1860 with one company at Wells or for the 3rd Admin battalion, Somerset RVC with headquarters at Wells ( also formed in 1860 )

It's cracking badge Joel and I think they are called a "Shako Plate", I didn't even get as far as you researching it. Why don't you email a photo over to the Somerset Military Museum, they are pretty good and usually send you more info than you'll know what to do with. Their email address is;
info@sommilmuseum.org.uk.

A very difficult badge to track down, and I can not find any examples on the Internet.

My guess is its the 3rd Admin battalion that were based in Wells.

As to date I am sticking with my comment on the rally report 1880-1890.

If it was mine I would donate it to Wells Museum,or the Somerset Military Museum.

Find of the rally, well done

This may also help with dating Joel - Looks to be 1880's

Somerset Light Infantry
Childers reformsThe reorganisation begun by Cardwell in 1873 was carried to its logical conclusion by his successor, Hugh Childers, in 1881. Under these reforms, infantry regiments ceased to bear numbers and were instead known by "territorial" or royal titles only. The 13th Foot accordingly became Prince Albert's Light Infantry (Somersetshire Regiment) on 1 July 1881.[35] As the county regiment of Somersetshire, it also gained the county's militia and rifle volunteer battalions, which were integrated into the regiment as numbered battalions. Within months the regiment had been retitled to Prince Albert's (Somersetshire Light Infantry).[36]

On formation, the regiment had the following battalions:[7]

1st Battalion (formerly 1st Battalion, 13th Foot)
2nd Battalion (formerly 2nd Battalion, 13th Foot)
3rd Battalion (formerly 1st Somersetshire Light Infantry Militia)
4th Battalion (formerly 2nd Somersetshire Light Infantry Militia)
1st Volunteer Battalion (formerly 1st Somersetshire Rifle Volunteer Corps)
2nd Volunteer Battalion (formerly 2nd Somersetshire Rifle Volunteer Corps)
3rd Volunteer Battalion (formerly 3rd Somersetshire Rifle Volunteer Corps)
The two regular battalions continued the system of alternating between home and foreign stations:

Locations of the regular battalions 1881–1914[7] 1st Battalion 2nd Battalion
Ireland 1881–1886 India 1881–1884
Burma 1884–1887
