interesting date .. is it 1573 or 1578 ..... it wasn;'t uncommon for the minters to use the same die in reverse to create another date.

personally i'd send the image to peter spencer at the searcher on coinidman@yahoo.co.uk and ask him for his view on the coin and the potential value.

a nice find indeed.

Thanks Alan. I will take better pics tomorrow in daylight and send him an email. It's 157? something. Just got confused by the triangle and circle after the 7

You haven't said how big it is, so there's a few things it could be.

mint mark is greek cross - of unsurprisingly 1578 - I think the bottom of the 8 is from a blocked die, hence the 'blob'

The figure 8 often looks like that on these. As probono stated, we'll need to know the size to confirm which denomination it is.

If you get a copy of Spink Coins of England - as long as it is one from the last decade or so, then the coin images in it are life-size - I sometimes put any coin I find over the images to match them up.

I still find it amazing that a 1p is 20mm you'd have never have thought it unless you measured it  :D

I do have the spinks 2013 book but I find it still confusing at times so I like a 2nd opinion  ;D :D
