Title: Some odd prints - anyone ever heard the rhymes before?
Post by: Neil on February 24, 2013, 04:50:41 PM

I recently acquired these two 1960's prints by Ronald Searle (he of the St Trinians and Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines sillustrations fame).  I didn't pay a lot and planned to move them on as Im not overly keen on them, but they are amusing.

However, I've gotten curious about the rhymes at the bottom of each one.  They are certainly a bit odd.  Can any one shed any light on them? Has anyone ever heard those rhymes before or has the artist made them up?

Cheers
Neil

There is something quite nice about those paintings Neil. They aren't rhyms as such are they. They seem to be extracts from an Apothecarys book. They certainly had some weird ideas about cures in those days. Seems it was thought that tooth ache was thought to be caused by worms in the teeth. One cure was chewing on a clove. They thought it would kill the worm, which would then drop out.
Amazingly I can remember my Grand Mother always had a little bottle of oil of cloves in the medicine box for tooth ache.

Your Grand mother? Val where have you been lol. oil of cloves is still the most effective remedy for toothache and dentists still use it. ;)

It's not polite to talk about a Girl when she's not there (or here)  ::)

When you get to my age everything seems like yesterday. Trouble is you can't remember yesterday. ;D
My poor old Gran died in 1967 so it's not really that long ago. :D

The cloves didn't work for her either. She had all her teeth pulled out when she was in her early 20's with no gas or needle in the arm. :o  At least some things have changed for the better.

Val

p.s. I know they still use oil of cloves Geoff. I just haven't needed it for 40 years !!!!!!

As long as that " knoble" only fits around your ankle. Either way it would
stop me running off  ouch !  ;D ;D

Thanks for the reassurance b.buoy.  One of the worst days of my life, and I was only 27.  I went to have 2 out and when I woke up they'd all gone  :o

Still the up-side is I haven't had tooth ache for 42 years  ;D
