After an early start to try and avoid the rush hour bottle neck in a local town, i reached the detecting site around 8.35am A quick exchange of pleasantries with my colleague and we were off. my first signal of the day, produced the only hammered of the day, and as soon as i saw what it was, Bangor Citizen came to mind ...... enjoy it young man the second signal gave me the dress hook, and i thought wow .. this is going to be a good day ..... however after that there were the usual buttons and musket balls. one lovely little button, last piccy, is no more than 3mm diameter, and it has a complete shank. I'm well chuffed with that. Oliver Cromwell was the head of the commonwealth, the only reason some coins are actually called Cromwell coins is because they have his bust and name on them but they span exactly the same years. Well Geoff, as you ask ... The Cromwell coinage comes after the Commonwealth in the Spinks, point 1 & they give the commonwealth dates as 1649 - 1660. Yet funnily enough under "Cromwells reign if we can call it that, NO DATE is given for his coins. So one could argue that Cromwell coins are a subsidiary class of the overall classification under the heading of commonwealth coins which cover the period 1649 - 1660. Personally, this is where one now starts to play the game of semantics, and as such, is largely irrelevant unless the experts who define the classification groups, change their decision.
