Post by: sodbuster on May 06, 2009, 05:38:46 PM
Has anyone an opinion on which are the best batteries to use . I use Duracell myself , are there any better ?

I HAVE JUST INVESTED IN A SET OF RECHARGABLES  DONT KNOW HOW  LONG THEY WILL LAST IN THE DETECTOR  BUT I WLL BRING ALONG A SPARE SET OF DURACELL     JUST IN CASE

I use the rechargable pack mine comes with , I never use the battery option, to expensive. Does your detector have a chargable pack option?

I'm pretty sure it does ( whites m6 ) I was told that the rechargeable batteries have a steep drop off when they start to discharge and that Duracell drop at  an even rate . Batteries have come down in price a lot in the last few years . My last pack of duracells cost me under £5.00 for 16.
I usually get about 5/6 ( 40+ hrs ) full days detecting out of a set of 8

Buying cheap batteries is a false economy so only use branded alkalines mainly energisers and durocells the high preformance when possible the only problem I,ve encountered is that the energisers seem to vary in size have trouble getting them into my goldmaxx holders the duracells fit sweet as a nut  ::) mole

Alan my whites battery pack , charges overnight and is good for two complete days detecting, not only that you dont have to fully discharge it before charging.

;D I'm a Philistine , just use what's available and the cheapest , seems to work for me! Tried the expensive ones and the size does alter.

i use duracell extra batteries,I have tried rechargeable but they did not last as long between the charges as the duracell. When i looked into this i found that most of the rechargeables run at 1.2 volt and will only charge to this value as my detectors use 8 AA batteries which are 1.5 volt with is in mind it became clear that i was already down by a couple of volts before i left the house.

Sodbuster (Alan) where did you find 16 Duracell for £5 ? That is a brilliant price and I want some...lol....I paid £5.99 for 8 in Wilkinsons. Used them at the Rooksbridge Rally. I had to change my rechargeables at the Caerleon 2 Rally as the Quattro turned off on me. The Duracells were still showing a full charge at the end of a days detecting at Rooksbridge.

Jonola i buy my duracell either from argos, tesco or B&Q just keep your eyes open for the best deals most of which are buy 8 get 8 free and then just bulk buy the shelf life on them tends to be about 2 years and they do keep for this length of time.

Cheers Dave. I'll keep that in mind. I wasn't too happy with the performance of the rechargeables but the Duracell seemed great value for money so if I can bulk buy in a sale I'll be even happier  ;D

I must admit I've never seen Duracell rechargeables. Perhaps it's like my detecting and I'm just not looking hard enough  :D I'll keep a look out for them.

wow,  iv'e never seen them either, hmmm  i can'#t get the re-chargables into the battery compartments though on mine, their too wide, even some of the ordinary batts are too wide too and get jammed .  dohh     so i stay away from those makes now

I think I've found the ones for my Quattro. They are on offer too. I think I'll wait for Paul (Waltonbasinman) to tell me if they are any good for my  Suzie Quattro though.

You are right Al, a few rechargeables seem to be a bit bigger than ordinary alkaline.

i can't even get them in the ones iv'e tried anyhow,   the larger ordinary ones get jammed in there and its a sod trying to get them back out,  especilly out in the fild, i carry a multi pen knife with me now  in case my batteries go and iv'e got to dig them out, lol  which iv'e had to do a few times,

looks good. Have to see what the postage is though. What detector do you use Al? Seems a heck of a pain having to dig a screwdriver out every time.

The main problem with NMHydride batteries or even Cadmium in that they are under powered.
The type I had was only 4.8v  for the 4 instead of 6v as the ordinay ones.

I solved that problem by mounting a six sized holder on the outside of my detector and blanked one off with a piece of copper wire from negative to posotive and loaded  5 NMHydrides

Even then the batteries were below par but better in the end. Regard the volts as the engine and the MaH as the petrol and there you have it. The higher the Mah the longer the batteries will last. Those you see are 2350 MaH, quite different to the 700's when they first came out years ago.

arr thats interesting Charles,  if i tried that i'd proberbly blow myself up lol,
yeah they are usually less than the usuall power too,
i just checked my 9v, and its 200 mah   and don't last long,  my penlights dont last a week either, not sure what mah they are though.
Alan

As I used the AA type I am not familiar with the 9v type but it is worth asking about the rechargable 9v. They may come in larger capacity, and you can test them every day for capacity, Alan.

I sent away for 2 packs of these Durecell on Wednesday Charles on your advice about the longer power in the higher m.a.h ,  they came this morning  they are much higher than the ones i had at 2.650 mah,  the others were 1300.

i ordered 2 packs x 4,
that was £14, 25  inc, tax and postage, while they are on offer,   i looked at the Argos catalogue  and they wanted
£11.65  just for one pack of 4,  £23. 30    for 2 pACKS ,   so thats a good deal,
