Title: AXE HEADS
Post by: wayno on August 28, 2012, 06:14:41 PM
HELLO ALL
I was very forturnate to have found a Bronze Age Looped Socketed  Axe Head Approx c(900 B.C) last weekend this is my second  Axe head that I have been lucky enough to stumble upon First one being a Palstave Axe Head approx c(1500 B.C).
The both axe heads were both suffering from bronze disease the first one I found I went a little mad on the cleaning side using tap water was my first mistake should use destilled water because of the chloride in tap water and then used a  wire Brush to get all the Blue powder off.
Well lucky enough I don't think I have done that much damage to it as it was in a bit of a state in the begining.

So this time I am going to do as the book says to do with this one. This one is not as bad as the first one (Palstave).
I have cleaned it up a bit using a brush (quite  a sturdy brush) got most of the powdery bits off and then I baked it for 1hr in oven. It as gone darker in colour but most of the powder substance is off it. I have now orderd some benzotriazole to treat it and will be soaking it then in distilled water for 14 days. have been told I may have to repeat this.

If anyone as any advise to give me on cleaning these please email me

heres some Pics

Go easy on the cleaning Wayno. You don't want a 3000 year old artifact to look like it was made yesterday. I would brush all the loose dirt away and leave it at that. At auction a nice bronze axe head does not realise the money I believe it is worth, say £250 to £350. Over clean it, and it might make £75.

Hi Herbie the reason I am cleaning them is they are suffering from bronze disease. Once they have been treated and cleaned hoping to wax them. Would never sell them would consider loaning them to local museum or local schools.

A lovely find Wayno but two is just plain greedy ;D
Make sure that your not confusing bronze disease with natural patina or verdigris as I can see no sign of bronze disease on your new find.
