Title: ITV 1 8pm Britains Secret Treasures
Post by: Val Beechey on July 16, 2012, 06:45:55 PM
Interesting series of programs starting tonight, ITV 1 8pm  about treasure finds by the British public. This includes finds by detectorists.  Might be worth a watch.

i got irritated with the repetition of references to gold and the utterances by a female present 'its amazing' -

i calaculated i heard that expression at least 10 times in the half hour programme .... any guesses as to how many times we'll hear that phrase over the week???

I found the story of the Medal very touching. There's something about seeing a Man near to tears. Just demonstrates how important it can be to trace decendents if possible.

Another thing I picked up when reading about the programes was something being shown on another episode. A lady found some gold coins that were I.D.'d as Eight Escudo coins also known as Doubloons.(I didn't know that)
The PAS in Lincolnshire, namely Adam Daubney, said they were the highest gold denomination coins of the time and not the sort of thing used for everyday transactions.
Now that was intriguing as I found a £3.12.0d coin weight a few weeks ago.. I read that it was the coin weight of Eight Escudos.   What the heck was it doing in a field down the lane. :o
I can't find any History re.the area but have suspected there was a substantial building in the field that has long since gone.
Guess where I'll be going when the grass is cut. ;D
