Title: 58 Years Old
Post by: Val Beechey on July 04, 2012, 07:00:46 PM
Can you believe this Half Crown. I found it on the beach today and I can't believe the condition. 58 years old and still looks almost new.
One thing is for sure, none of todays coins will look like this in 2070. (Unless they've been kept in a cupboard. ;D)

I once lay on a beach for a day,  and came off all red and crinkly, so 58 years beats me. ;D

nice find Val well done.

Is very peculiar to look at those coins and see them as old . I used to spend those all the time. Lovely coin really weighty and a good size, you really felt you had some real money as a kid when you had a few of them in your money box.

When I left school aged 16 Iwas a Mod and had an LI150 lambretta scooter ,Half a Crown used to buy me a gallon of  petrol  with enough left over for for some 2xstroke oil  ;D

Ah, those were the days, Peanut.  I thought to myself 'if I'd had Half a Crown in 1954, I'd have thought it was Xmas'

I remember having Half a Crowns worth of petrol in my Mini. Strange to think it's decimal equivelent is 12 1/2 pence. It just doesn't seem to equate.
I was just amazed that it still looked so good after kicking aroung the beach for so long.

Thanks, everyone else, for your kind comments. Not the greatest find in the world but very nice all the same.

Val

could have filled your tank for £2 quid Val and they say that things wern't better in the old days lol. ;)

Mind you on my first job in the summer hols I only earn't £5.00 a week  ;D

I'm definitely getting withdrawal symptoms, might have to detect the garden again if things don't improve soon :'(

Interesting to see the comments on Half-crowns.

My first job was paid 6 of those for a 48 hours 5.5day.

How times have changed.. ;) :D Jerry.

I was just going to ask, When did you start work then JBM. ;D

For the uninitiated that was £1.10.0d  or £1.50p.

First wages kinda give away your age. Peanut is younger and I'm in the middle. My first wage was £3.11.4d. But, I didn't have a car till I was 18. That was my little blue Mini and it cost £20.00.  Back in the days before M.O.T's.  Good job because the floor had holes in it that you could see through and one of the front wings was smashed, including the head light. I drove it like that for ages. Great little car exept when it rained but it loved the snow.

If, the biggest word in the dictionary.

My eldest has the same idea about old bikes. He's just rebuilding the 3rd one a Kawasaki KH500. Would you believe he's got them in his front room.

NO HE'S NOT MARRIED. And thank G. he doesn't live with me.

Hi Peanut
Yes he did a good job there. The next one in the pipe line is the KH500.
Must admit I don't miss the smell of oil and bike and car bits all over the house. Now I have fossils and bits of iron and brass. Still one of these days I might have bits of silver and gold. :o ::) ;D
