Title: Berkshire Today
Post by: staterchaser on April 17, 2012, 09:01:02 PM
Another GR8 day out with Ray, Ian and Phil today to a new farm for us in Berkshire. All had some interesting finds, I'll leave the lads to put their stuff up. My best find was a hammered practically the last hole of the day. Would appreciate id, looks a bit different from the usual.
Sorry about the quality of the pics just come in and shattered.
Ceri

Excellent result Ceri and as you say a little different, from what I can see I'd say it's a penny of William I, so pretty damn rare. Pity about the ware on it but still a nice find.
If you have a Spink to hand try it for size against 1250 ???
Still looking for a mint?

Well Pipster emailed me a couple of shots this morning just to get an id on some of his finds, well....................Sorry Ceri you have been knocked into second place lol
One of his finds is a Saxon Chatelaine and a real cracker at that, difficult to date for certain and could be anywhere in the Saxon period but for my money dates between the 8th and 11th centuries. Very well done Phil ;)

Very well winkled Ray, I can't be certain at all from that piece but I think your partly right in that it's house of Constantine but later than Constantine himself. The style looks more the elongated head type which becomes the norm     around the middle of the 4th, Constantius II  ??? ;)

i agree with Geoff, it's certainly a later house of constantine. The elongated heads are always fun to identify. well found Ray, Ceri Ian and the one and only Pipster ..

Great find Ceri.

I'm a beginner on ID'ing Norman coinage, but it does look to me like William I and the reverse legend appears to be GOD ON ÐEOTFORD.

This would be Thetford mint and the moneyer Goda.

One for Ed Besly to take a look at I think!

Incidentally, the chatelaine could be much later, see here:

I think that UKDFD assumption is slightly tenuous and a bit sweeping. The 18th-19th version is silver and couldn't it be a Victorian reproduction as they did like everything from the medieval/classical world in their fashions?

Below is a silver Fibula, the style of which both PAS and UKDFD have listed as being Roman but Chef believes they are modern as the one below can be bought in Taunton museum for £20  :D

Sorry for the sarcasm but you understand what I'm getting at ;)
