Title: Great day out on a club dig
Post by: Villan (Neil) on April 16, 2012, 07:09:17 PM
Hello All.I went on a club dig up to Devon yesterday and it was a cracking day out.It was an early start,up at 5,met up with the other members at 8,with another hour's drive to the farm. The field that I spent most of the day in, was huge and surrounded by some stunning  views.

My first good find was a beehive thimble, almost complete,I've never had one of these before. My previous thimbles have been the thin, copper type and always squashed,so I was chuffed.Next up was a cracking Hibernia half penny 1723.The portrait is in very good condition and it is definitely my oldest and best copper find to date. ;D

I also found other various bits and pieces,a nice clothes fastener, some broken bits of ornate copperwork, part of what might be a purse bar, some musket balls and the usual shotty cartridges, lead and buttons etc. Then I got a cracking signal and out popped this

At first I thought it might be a compass, but it was hard to tell,so after a while I put it in my box and carried on.I didn't find much more, not that I was complaining,I did very well.I saw a few nice hammereds fall to some of the other members, and a few nice milled silvers too.
When I got home I gave my "compass" a gentle clean up.I then noticed the numbers inside and realised that the lettering on the outside represented the months of the year and it is a pocket sundial. ;D

Really pleased with it,one of my best finds ever. Here's some of my finds.

nice finds neil , that coin is a woods halfpenny or farthing depending on size and quite scarce , the yanks go nuts for them as they were a colonial issue

Well done on the sun dial - I also found one a few years ago in woodland, but not in anywhere near as nice condition. Does anyone have an idea on the date of these and how they would look complete?

Hopefully your recent detecting luck will rub off on the mighty Villa - looking a tad dicey there!

see you soon
Neil

Found three in all.Two were lucky bag material Copper, and the other a classy sundial made of Brass. like Villans.
Mine was dated early 1700s,think Villans a bit earlier. The only thing missing on this Sundial is the metal circular strip in the middle this would slide around for adjustment.I see like Villans mine was missing to.....Think the strip must have been made of Steel.......Sold it to a Dealer at a Rally in Hampshire for  £170.00 He  in fact was a member of the POCKET SUNDIAL SOCIETY and commited this one was the best he had seen,so Villain polish it up they come up great.Loved the Beehive Thimble and bits and Bobs....Loved the inlet you were searching.
