Post by: cam1986 on March 22, 2012, 06:42:11 PM
I live in south wales. Swansea

2 detectors have been recommended to me:

Ace 250

SCOPE CS3MXi

Like a minefield with the choice of gear out there!! Help!

Budget around £300 max

I would like to detect on the beach and in fields etc

Any help would be great

Cheers

you can get a second hand ace 250 for half your budget or a brand new euro ace and enough change for a decent shovel and finds pouch.

Been reading quite a bit by people who own the Euro Ace saying they get so many false hits. Is this common with that model or all detectors?

I dont know much about them to be honest im sure someone will be along in a bit that can tell you,i'm waiting on replies to my post asking about the garrets. I can tell you i bought a whits dfx for your budget a two years ago and that found me hammered coins but they say an mxt is just as good as a dfx but easier to use. sorry if im confusing you like you say minefield.

For beach detecting (wet sand) i will not use the Garrett ace 250  i did have one and on wet sand it wasnt very good at all, but all together its a good start up machine. Personnally if you can pushyour budget a bit more try the x terra range

Yeah the garrets are cheap and you dont really hear any haters of them but as far as the falsing goes i think that is any detector with the sensetivaty too high but dont quote me on anything im no expert in detecting.

Hi Sticky , on wet sand they not that good to be honest but in general its a good machine but i will get the bigger coil  but been honest i had mine for nearly a year and was happy to upgrade my machine but like i said its a start up machine after a while sure you want to get a better machine .Hope this help but the end of the day we all have a personnal choice . Nap.

OK well as Nap has said the Ace is not a wet sand machine and doesn't pretend to be. Some will tell you that they detect OK with theirs but to be honest the depth they are probably reaching with a low sensitivity makes it a waste of time for the serious beach hunter.
And I'm afraid the same goes for the Cscope but more so....It hates the wet sand.

So Now I've burst your bubble what next? The machines that work well on the wet and dry either by design or accident are;-

Minelab;
Etrac
Explorer..................any model
Sovereign...............any model

Whites;
DFX
MXT
M6
Prizm 6T

Lots of other machines will work but you will be sacrificing sensitivity to keep them stable. If you can push the budget  another 50 or 75 then all these machines (except for Etrac) can be had secondhand ;) Here's just a few of current ones on ebay

if you haggle this price (which you should always do) you should get it a bit lower or get a pouch chucked in at least.

if you buy from a shop you get a guarantee, ebay prices are usually a bit cheaper if you dont mind the risk of buying a lemon. whites are well built machines i liked mine alot.

Thinking about it you may aswell get a loan buy a Deus or etrac or a t2 se because its going to happen evetually and you can't fight it.

Thanks guys for bursting my bubble!! So, Ace 250 and that Cscope out of the equation.

Got to narrow it down now to one that fits my budget and needs.

I'll tell you Cam the Sov is the King of the beaches, there is nothing as good on wet and dry.

I thought it was an old model now or am i wrong?

Title: Re: Need my first detector
Post by: Chef Geoff on March 22, 2012, 10:59:41 PM
It Is an older model but the depth of Sovs and explorers has never changed regardless of models and if you have a search on line you'll find that the sov model that is still regarded as the best on beaches and pasture is the XS-2pro.
In fact although the Elite superseded it, they reverted back to some of the functions when they made the new GT.

Title: Re: Need my first detector
Post by: cam1986 on March 22, 2012, 11:01:36 PM
So the Elite is a 'current' model?

I wouldnt be happy buying a 2nd hand one that has 'age' and no warranty. The Elite are worth checking out?

XS2A Pro is a cracking deep machine, bit heavy but so are most minelabs. An oldy but a goody :)

;D like i said everytime its a personnal choice best before you buy come to a rallie and sure we will be able to let you try different machine this way you may have a little idea what to buy , posting a thread regarding your first machine its difficult because we all got different opinions on each models . Chef have posted the machine for both beach detecting and land but if you want a brand new machine your budget of £300 will not happen brand new nachine will go for both land and beach around the £600 .Good luck with your first choice its not the easy one but you will eventually get your machine .Nap

Thanks but would tove to get a detector first. If i went to a rallie without one i would be gutted! lol

WHITES MATRIX M6 looks good but beyond my budget new.

More reading needed me thinks.

Well, we have said it before, a secondhand DFX for £350 ish is about as good as you can get for the money for both land and beach, excellent machine, not as deep as the Sov as standard but superb, light and nicely balanced with a great display...  Sold mine to Merriman88 and it's bringing home the goods.  Probably should have kept it LOL !

Ok a bad review for the beach and youve answered my question about garrets.

See i said im no expert.

You are going to need to spend nearer £600 + to buy any detector that will give decent results on both wet and black sand and on fields.

You need to decide how much of your time will be spent on what sort of ground. If you intend to do mostly beach detecting then buy a good beach detector .
If you intend to spend 75% of your time on fields then buy a good land detector with a reasonable beach performance, like the Garrett Ace 250 or Euroace . I would thoroughly recommend the garrett Ace 250 or Euroace at £250 or less . You'll  unlikely to do better for an all round lightweight value for money detector in my opinion.

Wet sand requires a specialist detector type which will not do well on both wet sand and earth unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money.

ps my advice would be to disregard recomendations based upon what people have found with which detector . The best detector in the world can miss stuff if there is nothing there to start with and plenty of hoards have been discovered without detectors so what does that prove ?

Whereabouts in the Country do you live ? if you put your location there is bound to be someone in your area that can take you out and let you have a go at their detector so you can make a more informed choice

Cant wait to buy my first MD. Swaying towards a Euro 250 even though read lots saying about false signals with one.

Will see if i can pick up a 2nd hand one now.

Garrett Ace 250 or Euroace

Which one and why? Thanks

Title: Re: Need my first detector
Post by: Napoleon on April 20, 2012, 10:49:20 PM
Well bigger coil on the Eurorace more descrim but more expensive, to be honest they both do the same job i did have a ace 250 but like i said many times if you want to go on wet sand its not the machine you will need but you said you just started so a Ace 250 wll be a good start i find romans , gold ring , so the machine is working well but you will eventuallly want to upgrade your machine so start by the ace 250 and if you hooked with metal detecting get a bettter detector in the following year i have done that and its for the best , The ace 250 at £120.00 is a cracking price so dont wait to long . Good Luck  ;) .Nap
