Interesting find. Looks a bit like a medieval dagger quillon, some here:

Looks like you've got yourself a quillon Rob, if it was a tap handle the hole through the centre would more than likely be square.  Well found mate  :) :)

Certainly looks like a quillion to me - otherwise known as a dagger guard (like on a moden day sheath knife).

A cracking find and I dare say the pommel from the end of the dagger is likely to be in close vicinity - get back out there Rob!

Great find mate

Neil

Thanks guys, if its medievel its in lovely condition , pic doesnt do it justice.

I like the farmers take on it though (I'd found a flattened musket ball near to it by the way)

The farmer said ,
' I recon its the tap off a beer barrel and the guy was fetching it to the field for the workers to have a drink, then he lost the tap....no drink, so they shot him with the musket ball'.......lol

Has he been taking imagination lessons off some of this sites members?

Reply back off Mark Lodwick

Hi Rob,

I am still unsure about the item, sorry! It resembles a smaller, and perhaps Romanised version of the Iron Age toggles but I have been unable to find a similar parallel. So, its either a very interesting and unusual find or a handle from something more modern.

I'm sorry its not more help. I will return it to Ian on Wednesday.

Best wishes,
Mark
