Title: Who had one of these?
Post by: Chef Geoff on December 13, 2011, 10:42:44 PM
I'm sure a little while ago someone was looking for an id on an item the same as the one pictured below. If so this is what it is, probably Roman and pretty rare;

A cast copper alloy potters tool, possibly a tile comb. The object is T-shaped in plan, has a handle with a circular cross-section which develops into a narrowed square frame that may have been the tang for insertion into a wooden or bone handle. The head of the object has a continual wavy line moulded in high relief. Similar objects have been recorded in the literature (e.g. de la Bedoyere 1989, 59; ref. 34b) and also on this database although there is an ongoing debate as to whether isolated examples are indeed Roman tile-combs; many may well be post-medeival pastry jiggers. A very similar artefact, with the same square cross-section at the attachment end has been recorded on this database (SUSS-CBF7A4); this was found on a site that had produced numerous Roman artefacts. Another similar example is HAMP-C618A2
