Title: A pair of Romans for id if possible
Post by: Villan (Neil) on December 13, 2011, 08:49:35 AM
I wonder if you could tell me anything about this pair of coins I found at Horsey.I've spent a few hours searching the net,but have had no joy so far. ??? I'm amazed at the amount of coinage that the Romans produced :o.
Am I right in saying that this type are described as AE coinage?
The larger of the two has a 17mm diameter and the smaller one has a 13mm diameter.
Thanks in advance  ;)

Hi Neil, I think nearly all of the Roman coins I saw on the day were from the house of Constantine so early to mid 4thC with only one that I remember being a slightly earlier Barbarous Radiate, I have a feeling that both yours are from around the same period, with a tentative id of the larger being Constantine (Victory advancing right stepping on captive) and the smaller being of Dioclecian (Diocletian facing left on right, holding globe and scepter, facing Victory to left, holding wreath and palm).
But to give amore accurate id could you do some more shots in better light (daylight)
Yes the AE just denotes the composition being copper/bronze (AS is silver and AU being gold) the smaller one would be referenced as an AE4 and the larger "would" of been an AE3. A larger coin 21mm-25mm would be an AE2 and a large Sestertius would be an AE1.

Cheers Nobby,I'm absolutely delighted with them.
Just being in that area and imagining all of the Roman activity that took place there was brilliant.
I had a chat with Rob and Eric and Eric was telling me what a busy place it was back then, really interesting stuff.
A brilliant day out ;D.
