As a general rule of thumb if you think the coin might be worth anything or of speical interest as Kev said a light brushing with a soft brush. Pre decimal coins Silver and copper In good condition i like the vinegar and water method soak for a few hours then use a soft brush to clean off the tarnish. Silver coins clean up lovely with the cooking foil and spit method. Some time ago i started collecting Roman coins and one of the best ways to clean heavy encrusted bronze coins is a long soak in olive oil then a wash in clean water then soak in fresh olive oil this could take weeks but its the best way to protect the Pattener. My fav cleaning tool is Electrolisys but this takes a big of skill not to over clean them so they are as shiny and a new penny lol Theres loads of info on this subject on the net theres even info on repairing coins that have been over cleaned.
