Title: 1817 Half Crown found on beach
Post by: Zeus (Joel) on November 04, 2011, 11:22:01 PM
i've spent the better part of  30 minutes trying to get this clean. The best thing that has worked is rubbing in foil. Will this damage the coin if i keep doing it to get it a bit better looking?

No it should be OK Joel as the foil and water will only react with the silver sulphide and not the silver, however it looks as if it's nearly clear of and surface deposits, if you mean you want it shiny then polishing it is a form of damage as it removes some of the actual coin.

well all the grime must be off it now as the foil had no reaction to it. Going to leave alone now and will post some finished pics 2moro, Thanks Geoff

Looks like a half-crown rather than a shilling; even better though!  Actually that has come out nice for a beach silver.
