Jesus - that looks a tad special. Any chance of seeing the back of it and do you know if its been cleaned at all as the feet and higher bits are shiny!

Any ideas on what its made of?

Very interesting find

A lovely find - its not a million miles away from this image I just Googled up of a modern reproduction of a Greek horse for sale.

The head certainly looks more styalized in a Greek form than Roman or Celtic to me. If it is Greek - you are writing part of Welsh history - get ready for some fame! :)

Amazing find - would have loved to have seen his face when that came out! I bet he was beaming from ear to ear! :)

It's Roman, and they normally have a Rider on them.
I know of one which came up in Bedfordshire and years later he found the Rider.
Nice find, well saved!!

Title: Re: one amazing find today
Post by: Neil on October 30, 2011, 06:48:46 PM
Hi Hog - the Roman ones look different mate and are much smaller from the examples I have seen and held. You maybe right, but I think the scale and design is too different.

A quality find whatever it turns out to be.

However sorry to pi$$ on the finders parade but ,I`ve seen  modern day Brass fakes with the verdigris looking just like that (patchy)and it makes me wonder.  ??? Good luck on the outcome anyway And I sincerely hope it proves genuine. The  FLO should verify if it is or not..

mark, still cant believe you found that !

Even if its not the real deal, its just something fantastic to dig up.  I know the farmer's family are well into horses, could have been one of their daughters, just dont know.

On the other hand if its real - steve, (farmersteve)  wayne and mikeTF will be trying to get you to sell it pronto to get their share of the booty ! lol. ;D

Take care

Well the word is out on the street......had conformation off Farmersteve this morning who had it appraised that it is a modern day reproduction...probably worth a few quid on ebay rather than thousands if it was the real deal...Had to keep an open mind and hopes about it but mega dissappointed all the same...a bit of brasso on him to give him a nice shine and up on the mantlepiece it goes as a reminder... :(

Title: Re: one amazing find today
Post by: relichunting on November 01, 2011, 12:14:55 PM
I was sure this was a modern copy, but as everyone seemed so excited about it I was hoping I was wrong

How a modern copy got in to the field in the first place is a complete mystery

Maybe one of the farmer's families lost it, or someone planted it for a joke

Post by: mickycoin "mick" on November 01, 2011, 02:40:36 PM
having read the story so far, even a modern copy would be worth a few bob, still makes no sence to bury it in the field in the first place lets hope it is the real thing,, get it looked at by the proper people ""game shot"" fingers, toes everything crossed for you goodluck  mickycoin ;D ;D

Title: Re: one amazing find today
Post by: Mrs Steptoe on November 01, 2011, 02:46:09 PM
Even though it is a modern replica it's still a lovely find.I'd have been delighted to have dug that up,whatever its age.I only hope it wasn't planted as a cruel joke.
  Onwards and upwards-keep at it.

Title: Re: one amazing find today
Post by: heather on November 02, 2011, 07:35:32 AM
ah shame Mark,

But they also had horse shows on that field if I remember, or one near it, so might have been a trophy for winning a class.

Great find all the same :) wish I had found it

take care

Weird thing is, there was another very similar sold on ebay 10 days ago from Bridgend.

Excellent bit of detective work Ceri. Given that the lighting and angle is different and of course the soil, there appears to be a slight difference in the shoulder boss and neck decoration, but the gold appears to be identical definitely from the same workshop.

I was there and in discussions over its condition, I overheard someone mentioning that there had been burglaries in the area in the past.
Maybe someone crossing the fields dropped it? It looks in too amazing condition too have been underground for more than a few years surely.

I think there may be an Elephant in the room here, lets face it the likelihood is that some idiot has put it there either on the same day or a couple before and not realising the disappointment this type of stupid prank can cause, they have now bottled it and can't admit to doing it, and yes they are almost certainly a member on here.
Those clean bronze areas are bright and shiny and those legs, not a bend in sight.
It happened on one of Avalon's digs last year and on the Corf rally by MLO and a Weekend Wanderers Rally.

Just resurrecting this dead topic, and to show there's one (or actually 10) born every minute, here's an almost identical horse on eBay, supposedly a detector find by the seller's dead grandfather. It's currently attracted 33 bids from 10 bidders, and is at £232 with a day to go:

Seller is oksanab2005

Using a little detective work and the eye of faith, If you look at the buying history of the Bridgend Horse, the buyes has also bought Police memorabilia and animal obedience books.

I wonder if the police have been training dogs on that field and That was left there for the dogs to find ?

Reported to Seller & Ebay as a Fake/Con & just received this reply from Seller...

ah a fake, please talk to brit museum as they have seen photos now,go look carefully between fake greek rubbish and this, for a start greeks dont have celtic design..there is no patina on fakes..
this aint no fake, its a genuine fake, im joking, its genuine was in my grandfathers house for years, dont go to greece on holiday as they are eating dog as nobody got money,

 LOL  ;D

Title: Re: one amazing find today
Post by: The Doc on December 01, 2012, 10:38:00 PM
I suppose to be fair to the seller, this is what he says in the item description:

"We Are Currently Clearing Out My Grandfathers House, He Was A Keen Metal Detectorist.. He Has A Vast Collection Of Finds. My Mother Is Sure This Horse Was Found By Him Many Years Ago. We Cannot Guarantee This So Selling This Horse As An Unknown Item..It Is Beautifully Decorated, Looks Like Gold So Perhaps It Has Been gilted In Places... We Did Show It To A Local Detectorist. His Opinion Is That It Did Come Out Of The Ground As The Patina Is To Be Expected.. He Did Make Us An Offer But We Declined, We Will Gamble On Ebay"

It started at £4.14, with no reserve, so the rest of the bidding is just down to the clueless folk believing they can see something that might be worth thousands, unless there's some shill bidding going on.
