Title: My First Hammered
Post by: ysbytymike on October 13, 2011, 09:07:34 PM
Visited a new farm on Wednesday - well to cut a long story short, found this little thing.
Looking at Spink 2010 page 250 and I think its a sixpence dated 1561 (just three years into her reign)

Would appreciate some expert advice if possible
Cheers
Mike

Lovely profile of ol Gloriana there, a fine addition to any collection. I'm guessing by the condition of the coin it was a pasture find. Well done.

Lovely find.

The coin needs some loving care by lavishing some silver polish on it.

:o  do not listen to Sparticus -  Please dont put Silver polish on it Mike , Its spent the last Four hundred and odd years in the ground happily building up an aged character the last thing you want to do is apply 'Uncle Bobs Ole Rejuvenating Cream' to it.  :o

;D ;D  Been doing a lot of reading regarding cleaning coins so will not be putting any chemicals near my finds.

A comment I read the other day was that even the 'fluoride' in drinking water can affect the deposits you find on coins
that have been in the ground a long time.
What was recommended was to 'spit' on the coins to clean them. I'm not chemist so I'm unsure if the acidity in our natural
body fluids would be strong enough to affect but you have to try to clean them somehow, so that's what I used to clean that coin
and it seemed to work fine. Spit and an old soft toothbrush.

After the majority of the contamination was removed by this method, I then did give the coin a quick wash under tap water with no noticeable affect.

Well done Mike, there will be no stopping you now ;) Was that with the XTerra?
Now you cleaning regime.....Ahhhh your innocents is so sweet  ;D Yes tap water has many nasty things in it, never quite sure how we are allowed to drink it lol but these chemicals have a greater effect on copper based items rather than silver.
Go and buy some deionised water from the garage it will save your spit and is a lot more sociable.
If the tooth brush is anything other than a baby's one then it still could be too hard, there are loads of posts on here regarding cleaning but if they contain anything other than water, foil, vinegar, soda oh yes and spit I would shy away using it on anything "good".

I am Innocent - 'honest guv'..  ;D

Yep Geoff, it was the x-terra. Getting to know the good signal from the rubbish now. Don't seem to be digging much in the way of iron since
I've been spending time getting use to it.
The coin I posted was just one of the 30 or so items I pulled out that afternoon. Most were things like foil, coke cans and rivets but I did manage two buckles
which I photographed last night. So, will have included on this post as soon as i can get them re-worked.
