Title: Roman coins from the colloseum Post by: Da Monkey on October 13, 2011, 08:03:17 PM Well, here's one for you guys, I'm on Holiday in Italy, just done Pompeii & Herculanium & Capri and now in Rome at the moment so I took a trip to the Colloseum, minus my detector :( (but theres some nice pottery/tile shards just lying around still in the gardens close to the colloseum).
At the top of the stairs there's a display with counters & tokens etc. found on the site related to the occupation and the games. In the lower left corner is a small pile of coins which are milled as far as I can see (Glass is very dirty). They've been there for quite a while by the looks of it. I reckon they're a pile of small change from the guy who made the display years ago and probably some lira put there to trick the unsuspecting American tourists... what do you reckon ? Due to some lower than life tourists thinking "ancient" always means valuable and pinching them they were replaced with the coins you see now in the 1980's. Iirc the coins were replaced atleast 5 times before the desicion was made to put the "modern coins inside. The coins you now see were found in the colosseum, either dropped or thrown into the hypogeum by tourists visiting the amphitheatre. Due to the diverse conditions in the hypogeum there are many rare plant species including orchids etc, The "modern coins" are collected to help reduce contamination.
