Title: Your Favourite Copper/Bronze coin in collection (Non Roman)
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on September 11, 2011, 09:01:34 PM
Metal Mickey gave me an Idea. I think that our Pre Decimal Bronzes are very overlooked and often neglected. To be honest I love finding a Bronze in good condition or with a Monarch not often found.  So simples , whats your favourite pre decimal copper/Bronze and what makes it your favourite ?

As the vast majority of my bronzes are totally worn "georgian" farthings and halfpennies they are almost impossible to identify. We often resort to the heads left/right story and the thickness of the flan, but then again maybe it's a Johnny foreigner or a jetton!!. So I was really chuffed when on one such specimen the the camera caught the outline of Willy & Mary last month. Might not be good condition, but the positive ID of a less common era made it for me:

Had this Victoria Token last week. A little confused at first as I didnt know of any Vicky coins before 1839. I think it was made to commemorate her coming to the throne. Its actually in good nick and the head is also good. Should clean up nicely. Perhaps I'll give it to RJM  ;D

Well I wasn't quite sure if Jettons counted but as Ceri seems to have pushed the door open with his token...what the hell ;)
As I've oft said before the 14th-15thC French jettons do it for me every time and think it's because this was the high medieval when a lot was happening, Joan of Arch, Crecy, Agincourt, Wat Tyler's Rebellion, Owain Glyndwr ect. I have found 12 over the years and none are too shabby and all probably have a tale to tell.

Well this was my first 'Irish" coin, as per usual the condition is pretty poor, George II  'Hibernia' penny 1769.
