Title: Brooch found on beach
Post by: Zeus (Joel) on September 09, 2011, 11:59:54 AM
Can someone put an age to this ? I've tried a couple of silver tests with zero results so don't think its silver but there seems to be something on the flat bit on the back but cant get it clean so see what it is. And the 2 stones thats left are probably not real either.

yes not bad. didn't think it would have been that early. So the 2 diamonds could be real ?

That style also came back in the 30,s and as its not gold/silver i would say its a very nice decorative item but not diamonds good luck PaulB.

Hmmmm, but the gold bits still look very gold, and theres only one metal that still looks gold after years on the beach and thats Gold!  :)

and you might want too try giving it a deep clean before discounting it as silver.....there could be a thick crust of silver oxide?

Well i've used the baking soda and foil thingy for about 5 min and it's starting to show silver around all the edges and on the back a bit so now i am thinking it is a silver brooch that need alot of cleaning. Can someone reccommend some more tips to help with this ? As this is going to be a long process me thinks  :'( :( >:(

What about lemon juice and tin foil? Don't know  if that will be too
Harsh?

It looks like gold was used for the clip pin. The only jewellery I have seen with gold used for hidden details is made of platinum. Silver would have been used for all of the detail.

I would just clean it with a soft tooth brush and some borax. Hydrogen peroxide would work too but its a bit harsh.

The beads look like rose gold.Try electrolysis soon clean that up.make your own from an old mobile phone charger some crocodile clips. And a stainless steel spoon just make sure you put the polarity's round the right way.or you will be plating  rather than taking off. :)

I have an electrolysis and have used it before and have just used it again along with more baking soda and foil. There's no hallmarks and it looks like the same metal as my pewter coin so i am going with it's a pewter brooch. I will be taking the diamonds to see if they are real or not.

I am liking that Joel and the back fixings certainly look like rose gold.

Not sure on the platinum front - gold fixings are often used on silver as well as platinum, but it would be a great result if it is. The weight may give it away for you as platinum is a dense and heavy metal.

Is it me or does it look to have something written on it in the middle?

Great find
Neil

To just add my 10 peneth worth, Brass comes out of water that colour so don't get to carried away just yet. I'm sure you've probably checked but if not make sure it's not meant to be black as it appears to be late Victorian/Edwardian and Mourning jewellery was very "in" the silver version of which was treated with neillo to blacken it.

have a try of the tin foil and drop of water or spit, and sniff for rotten eggs for silver.

For what it's worth it weighs in at 8grams. It does say something on the back but i can't make it out.
