Title: any idea on this coin ? Updated with Answer
Post by: Zeus (Joel) on August 25, 2011, 11:44:34 PM
My dad has given me a load of American coins and this one was with them. All he knows is that he kept it because he thought it was old but knows nothing more about it.

What's it made from? Pewter?

It could be Pewter. I am no expert on coins by far how do I tell if it's pewter ?

Edit* Had a look on the web and from what i read i would say Yes it's Pewter as it's a soft metal easily scratched with the finger nail and when cleaned has a very dull shine.

Nobby, you set off a train of thought.  Mexican  -  Spanish. Off I went to look for some. Have a look at coins-auctioned.com  Ancient Spanish, currently page 3.   There are one or two quite similar, all from Peru.

Just a thought. Is Joel in America at mo.??

It certainly looks as if Nobby and Val are on the money with their id's. Definitely looks the same family.
The obverse of the coin features a cross with the symbols for Castile and Leon

The one I was looking at is Phillip V Cob 1/2 Real 1700 - 1724
Spanish colonial coinage for Peru.  It looks very similar. Hope it is something like this Joel. It's in such great condition, could be worth a bob or 2.

Dont you just love the idea of Spanish Gold. It is almost orgasmic. :o

i cant find a good enough one to make a positive id right now but time is limited on the net so not had a really good look.

I'm sure we'll sort out what it is soon enough. Just want to say Thanks to everyone that has helped or even tried to help.

i don't think it's a cob. They are all silver and i think this is pewter and it's quite a thick coin with the same pattern on both sides

Hi Joel. Hope youre not in the danger zone for Irene. Come back safe. ;)

I wondered about the metal, the thickness and most of all the 2 sided markings. Very curious. We'll be interested to know what you find out.

Thanks Val, Irene is/was about 4 hours away from where I  and we didn't see anything from it. Just to add to the description of my coin/token it's about the thickness of a cartwheel penny and made of what I believe to be pewter. I will get this confirmed when I get back

Just got an answer from one of the American sites as to what this coin is. They have said

"your piece is a cast copy of a spanish cob treasure coin , if real it would of been made of silver and most likely just off struck from a set of dies and not so uniformed looking  from poured cast metal like pewter in a mould . it is a neat conversation piece though "

Yup still nice for the collection. Not very old either I don't think. The bloke from the other forum is just guessing early 60's to 80's. Ah well. One day I guess
