Title: any ideas???
Post by: Duggy on August 17, 2011, 09:36:51 PM
Me and my dad decided to go metal detecting near Caerleon golf course, and i found a large spike, not sure what metal it is, but it came up as non-ferrous on the detector, and we found it near a sort of kiln/furnace built into an old, hollow tree (which i'll take a picture of next time i go up there  8) ). Any suggestions would be appreciated, and thanks in advance :)!

I don't know what it is, but I would be interested to know what permission you had to detect there, as most of the land next to the golf course is part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

two bits of iron joined in photoshop, you can see the join in the background.

If its hollow it can show as non-ferrous sometimes, especially if the iron is very rusty.

Otherwise, its a roman spear without the tip.
