Title: Scottish hammered
Post by: benny on July 31, 2011, 04:59:34 PM
Found this one today, obviously a long way from where it was minted.
I'm not very clued up on Scottish coinage so if anyone can tell me which king/mint etc. I'd be happy!
Cheers.

Very nice benny. It's a second coinage penny of Alexander III, Class E, struck 1280-1286.

The mint is uncertain - it is believed the total number of points on the reverse stars indicates the mint. Yours has twenty, which is one of the less common ones but it is not known which mint it signifies.

Thats brilliant work Peter! Thats the second Scottish hammered I've found this year which is strange as I'd never found one after nearly twenty years of searching up until this year!

Well found. Even here in Scotland, Scottish hammered are rarely found and prized when they do turn up. :D
