Title: Just had a detecting experience that I can not explain! 18th July 2011 Post by: Neil on July 18, 2011, 04:46:27 PM Yesterday Katie and I attended the Christening and were Godparents to the beautiful Maggie Imogen Barton - daughter of Alex and Jonno - close friends of ours from Hong Kong.
The Christening was held in Holy Family (Cardiff) and Father Keris insisted on me having to quiz the 300 strong congregation at Sunday Mass on the origins of Catholicism. As a few of you know I am not Catholic, so I was praying he wouldn't ask me to answer any of the questions! Thankfully he didn't! Today I had a bit of Summer Rally organising to do for Detectingwales.com. The good news is that after meeting the farmers in person, two sites have been secured for Detectingwales.com, but are currently high in Rape Seed and Wheat - both farmers are praying for good weather to lift their crops. Rob will elaborate on the farmers preferred dates and the lay of the land later, but the farms are 300 acres and 800 acres in size in prime detecting locations. It sounds really promising and means we have a multitude of land sewn up from August to September! At 11am the farmers weren't ready to meet us, so Rob and I headed to a nearby farm he has permission for. After a quick chat to the friendly farmer , we headed off in different directions and my second signal of the day produced my first ever name brooch with the name MAGGIE on it! It freaked me out I can tell you! :o Coming back down to Earth we headed off to see the two potential Rally farmers - secured the Summer Rally Land (sorting the parking and the H&S in the process) and headed back to the other farm we were originally detecting on. After half hour I walked back to where I found the MAGGIE brooch and two minutes later within feet from the Maggie brooch I had two pieces of silver in my pocket! A 1844 Victorian (young head sixpence) and a 1921 three pence of George V! There were powerfull forces at work I can tell you! I can't explain it at all - but thank you Maggie! I have my own strange story to tell... About 5 months ago I was detecting down a local woods near to me and amongst other nice items, a lovely livery button. After much research I found it belonged to the Phillips family of Pembrokeshire. While doing my research I came across an American website from a Phillips family who had decedents from Pembrokeshire. Direct decedents of the family of which the livery button belonged. I should point out I'm from Pembrokeshire too. With this I was very pleased, but the story don't end there.... All along the name Phillips was ringing alarm bells in my head as my Grandmothers name is Phillips, so I did some further digging. Luckily about three years ago I researched my family tree and had traced the Phillips line back to about 1790. So with this information I contacted the American family and we compared our family trees. It turns out that I am a direct relative to the American family and a direct decedent of the Phillips family that used the livery button. I tried to post a story of my own 3 times. Each time it just either stuck and wouldn't up-load or dissapeared. I came to the conclusion it wasn't to be so I'm not trying again. Something spooky going on there. I too did my Family History and was surprised to discover that my Mothers side were Welsh. What was odd was that I'd already moved to Wales from the Midlands. My next Sister down had moved to Newport from Bristol and the next one down had moved from Spain to Swansea. None of us had any idea that we were 'Coming Home' Now thats strange, don't you think. Dunno about you, but I found researching my family tree extremely interesting. And someone else reckons they've traced us back to Alfred the Great. :o ::) Go figure.
