Title: Two hours at the beach equals two silvers - 15th April 2011
Post by: Neil on April 15, 2011, 03:25:28 PM
Following an early morning dental appointment, I noticed there was a low tide so headed to the local beach for two hours.

I have a long standing arrangement with the beach, which involves me picking up all the rubbish I find or see on it in return for at least one piece of silver a visit. I am glad to say we both held our parts of the agreement today.

On arrival, the beach had clearly lost some of its sand which is always a good sign. My first few finds were modern money. Then came a surgical steel tube which after looking long and hard dawned on me is one of those thing people wear in their ear lobes to strech them - a really nice find! :P

Further along the beach I started finding lots of broken washed glass including the old bottle neck in the photo and a Tizer rubber stopper. Next came a sweet sound and in my hand was a George V sixpence - date to be discovered when its cleaned. shortly after this popped a Victorian (bun head} penny and a brass 1940's threepence.

Next came the strangest lighter I have ever seen - I thought it might have been a CS Gas spray at first . This was quickly followed by a fairy fridge magnet and then my find of the day.

The find of the day for me was a silver Victorian Jubilee head Shilling that needs a damn good clean.

That was it 2 hours on the dot and 2 silvers to show for it - I'll take that.

Cheers
Neil

Well done Neil, keep plugging away. Just read Radnor Bandits comments about Borth beach. Its been very kind to me but only in winter and its taken me years to learn to read it.

Well done Neil.  All that in 2 hrs, I went down Tuesday and it took me nearly 6hrs to come home with 26p, and a toy racing car.  Never mind, lets hope all the day trippers loose their silver and gold.  I did find a bracelet the other week for a guy who was on a day trip.  His mate came running down to me to ask for my help.  His mate was a bit worse for wear (drink or otherwise), wasnt that bothered at the time, but he said it was sentimental.  I was cautious though.. Glad the area had people sitting around. With a description in my head (Bangle, 1" thick, silver metal, Ben Sherman stamped) I plotted the area, and hey presto found in 2 mins.  The guy though I had a talent, and I laughed.  He went running off shouting, she's found it, embarassing everyone looking, but hey ho, nice to give something back to its owner.

Neil you must have been digging like a demon. Nice finds, well done.

Marjie, well done also. Nice for someone to ask for help immediately. It gives you half a chance of looking like a real hero. Doesn't happen often enough.

Hello Heather. Welcome to DW.  Nice to see another Lady joining.

Dont know where in S/Wales you are but if you're anywhere by Tenby forget it at the present. Tides are great this week but there's a load of sand been washed in. Sand equals either no signals or a lot of digging.

There are a couple of Ladies that live your way Heather. Try going into the Forum, look for New Members section and introduce yourself. Ask you question again and I'm sure one of them will give you a shout.
One of them is Marjie. I know she goes down there sometimes.

Decided to go to southerndown - tide right out, absolutely nothing except rubbish.  Then went onto Ogmore - again just rubbish !!  wet and cold and nothing to show for it.

Im sure that the people who find all the rings on the beaches buy them in the charity shop before they get there !!  LOL

Im also going to start a scrap metal firm, as i think I could make a killing with all the metal I brought home today.  !! ;D

Onwards and forwards !

Sorry Heather. I have the monopoly on that.
Occasonally Hubby takes the bin bag out and can't understand why it's so heavy. ::) ;D
Need to bear in mind (in fairness to him) Mike , Dances with Badgers, went out on every low tide for weeks to find his goodies and he says he'd been trying for nearly a year before he found his 1st ring.
I still haven't found anything worthwhile anywhere yet but There's hope for us yet.

now hopefully with my "new" metal detector I will be able to do a beach properly without loads of false signal, as its a dual purpose !

Just a 5 pence would have been great ! lol. But thats how it goes.... im hoping to add to my 1 button found.  LOL

Doing the horses then sitting in and waiting for it to arrive. !

Hi Heather, you have horses?? so do I. See my pici.
What detector have you bought.  I knew the sand was deep but I went p.m. to see how my new spider coil behaved on the beach.
I have great hopes - when the sand eventually goes back to Devon. Plenty of good signals but very deep and I dont do deep. Too much like hard work, especially when the sand and water keep beating you to the next shovel full. >:(
Came back with one copper, one lead weight and a brass door handle plate. Ah well at least i tried, again. ;D

i am not successful all the time and most times come home pee'd off.because im down there a lot i can see what sand has moved.when its good it is very good but it only takes one tide to make conditions useless :)

HI

Breed welsh cobs with a good friend of mine (saithstud) who also detects - actually met Steve 24 yrs ago and he got me into metal detecting then, and started the horse stud together,  gave up MD when kids, hubsand (peter) and horses took over.  Not much luck then I have to add.lol  With working as well, something had to give.  Now dont work, so do horses, kids and hubby and then off to do some detecting !  Peter is actually buying the new one for me !

Still big time into the horses, but my no.2. son is getting into detecting and its revived the love I had for it!  Always loved it.

Made a mistake in ordering the detector, and now have to do it all again.   Getting a Whites DFX 300 (push button one !) and hopefully that will last for a few years like my old one.

At least with this one I can do beach and land

Well done on your finds !   Just love being outdoors and hate housework, so great excuse to get out !

Cant believe how much the detectors have come on in 20 yrs

H

Hi Heather
Glad to hear you've bought a Whites. Mine is the M6. Have just upgraded it with a spider coil and I have great hopes for it. I'm sure if I walk over it I'll find it. the big problem is finding somewhere to walk where 'IT' might be.
I'm sure you wont be dissapointed. Try your own fields first. You might be surprised what you find and get used to the new machine in the process.
At the risk of upsetting one or poss.two I've attached a pici of the Sec.B I had. He was my baby till 2 years ago. Did very well for me, won eveything we put him in, then went on to well for Deni Harper-Adams.
Good luck and happy hunting.

Val

We'll be banned in a minute !  lol    Tyna, know of them, but I dont know if I know them personally, as I meet sooo many people, probably if I saw them I would.

Val, - stunning !  I was so hoping for a dun this year, pally came out !lol

Anyway, as you say you have to walk over it.  Where I live is a very old village Peterston Super ely, but our particular fields are really quiet.  Found a 10p and thats been about it.   Im trying to get brave and do by the river as the bed is very low at the moment and apparently there was a big fight from St. fagans at the bridge in PSE.  But to have everyone looking at me ...... ohhh no - dont think I can do that ! lol

Tried to join the cardiff scan club, but you have to go to the meeting to join and again, im not a brave person.

Stupid at my age really ! lol

Its great talking to everyone though and Mike, Im going down to aberavon VERY soon, since you are on hols !  lol

Heather, know what you mean about being on show. Most of last year I kept looking at Wisemans Bridge and even got there one day complete with all mod cons. Then I saw the line of cars lined up along the front, some with people in them and people on the beach. I thought OMG it'll be like being on the stage and I chickened out and went home.
I think we have this idea that they all see us as treasure hunters and robbers. So silly. I have been asked on numerous occasions if I've found any treasure to which I simply smile and say 'I keep hoping'. Most people are just interested in what you're doing and how the machine works etc. and turn out to be very friendly.
Must admit I'm still a little reluctant to 'go on show'. I have permission to scan the villiage green but can't bring myself to. There's a Co-op and the community centre and the Doctors next to it so very busy.
Go on, have a go, be brave. Rivers can be very productive (they say)  ::)
