Title: Denarius Concretion
Post by: staterchaser on April 09, 2011, 09:04:14 PM
Thanks Peter for the id on the denari on the other thread. I have never had a denari like this before with the concretion. Others have come out looking like the day it was dropped. Why would this be so different would it be the soil? I have given it a light clean and it has started to show the silver.
Can anything be done to bring it back to it's former glory? Cheers, Ceri

Loads of silver polish and hard brushing will ahve it looking like new.

Was it on the surface?  ;D

Hard scrubbing and silver polish?

Why not stick it in a bag of grit and shake it?

PLEASE dont do anything so destructive, coins in this condition are best treated gently with the minimum of abrasive materials. The concretion is just minerals that have adhered themselves to the surface silver nitrate. soaking them in warm soapy water will get them off without too much trouble.

I use an ultrasonic cleaner so there is no side-to-side motion involved at all.

Eric,

I was joking -----------hence the winking smilie!

Staterchaser popped the coin off to me earlier for cleaning. I will have a go later when I get the wire brush
out of the shed, and can of industrial silver polish.

There will be no side to side motion in my cleaning. It will be all up and down movements.  ;D

It was a sod to clean and wore out one wire brush and I got through half a bottle of silver polish but it's come up
lurverly.

It can now be enjoyed for generations of Staterchasers to come, or you can leave it to me!

Anyway, a pint of pear cider will equal the bill  :)

He's never got any energy.....I'm always having to give him psychological pep talks when we're out.............and that's
just to get him back to the car! He's never fallen asleep when we're out. I'd kick his arse.

He's a jammy sod though. Good job he hasn't a Deus or he'd be finding even more!  ;D

It appears the ground didn't open up it's offerings until 4pm. In one small area a bit of stuff turned up inclusing Ceri's Denarius. The gods were rewarding the diehards.

I left at 3.15pm to listen to the rest of the cardiff match on the radio. Don't regret it though as it was a cracker.

I suppose we can't have everything in life.  :'(
