Title: barmouth cardigan bay right sort of sand Post by: sellos on February 18, 2011, 05:17:44 PM has anyone ever detected barmouth beach,i went there on the last spring tides and only found 4 modern coins,the sand was really soft no black sand visible even when digging,can certain beaches have the wrong sort of sand,thinking of going this weekend.

Barmouth from what I can remember is an estuary and generally estuaries are full of dynamic sand movements .This sand is generally soft and in constant movement with the tides and currents.There are finds there but getting to them is much harder and you have got to be lucky to be in the right spot where the sand isn't too deep. You are better off finding a good slopeing bathing beach which is or has been very popular .Your looking for the harder deeper layers of sand where coins and rings settle and dont move. Black sand ,clay ,gravel and peat or hardpack about 6-12 inches down would be ideal conditions-. Popular bathing beaches are good for coins and rings -there must be many not too far from barmouth give them a go and have fun.
