I am no expert but the ruff around the neck and the hat style i would say Elizabethan but i may be wrong.  :-\

Following Pauls thinking, if it is contemporary to the Elizabethan period then the ruff is probably 1560s as towards the latter part of the century the ruffs were MUCH larger.

Or I could be wrong  ;)

Neil, i think you have hit the nail on the head there. I seem to recall whilst excavating at Croft castle in Herefordshire in 2002 something similar was found and was identified as a walking cane head. I knew i had seen something like it before,

I think it was a fad when they were placed on the top of pencils, depends on the size of the hole but don't look big enough for a walking cane from the pics.
