Title: More Fibulae
Post by: Chef Geoff on August 29, 2010, 02:07:22 PM
Well due to my car deciding it needed some TLC I was unable to attend the Wick rally today, but not to miss out on some detecting action I ordered a taxi to pop up to the same field I found the 2 fibulae and Roman coins from a few days ago.
This field is still quiet apart from areas of iron infestation, which sends the sovereign in to complete silence for long periods.
Unfortunately I didn't take a coat as it was lovely and sunny when I left the house, oh dear was I in for a soaking!

Well in the two hours I detected, before surrendering to the elements I added to the Roman total with another 2 pieces of Fibulae (tops this time, totally different style though) and one piece of another radiate coin.
The strange thing about all of this Roman activity is that all 4 brooches are Romano British (1st century) but the coins are all late 3rd.
So where are the coins from the early period? where are the brooches from the later period? and what the hell happened to everything in between?
A mystery there to be solved.

Nice finds Chef - certainly a fair bit of Roman activity on that farm.

Maybe the area was only settled in the middle Roman period and hence why no early or later Roman artefacts.

I am sure theres more to come out there.
