Title: Spearhead
Post by: Chef Geoff on March 11, 2010, 07:37:33 PM
Some of you may already of seen this over on MLO, but this is the Bronze age spearhead I found about 4 weeks ago near Newport. It's from the middle Bronze age 1450-900BC. 2 others with the same dimensions have been found in North Wales which leads the FLO to think they were either made in Wales or possibly Ireland.

One interesting point that came up when I was talking to the FLO was that there is now a belief that the Irish Tinker of more recent times who came around and would mend pots and pans and make buckets etc, could be the descendants of a much older tradition of travelling Irish metal workers as some of the best examples of metal working in all metals have been found in Ireland.

I just have this mental picture of the "traveling Tinkers" offering to fix your chariot and "tarmac your drive for you sir", and by the way,i think the guttering blocked on your Celtic round house ;D

I found one identical to that one five years ago, but mine was broken in half and was thought to be a votive offering,it had the same brown patina which you get when bronzes are recovered from water or wet land like bogs or marshes.

Excellent find !
