Title: love tokens
Post by: mickycoin "mick" on October 20, 2009, 09:48:57 AM
i think we all  have found a love token at some stage through our detecting days, but what is your earliest one?? and what coin was it?? mine is a william sixpence, and  also the more common copper coin, rubbed flat so you cannot put a date to it,why we are on the subject, anyone know why they used coins??  should get some interesting replies :-\ :-\ :-\  mick

i all ways thort why they used coins was because they had value and if the one you gave it  to gave it back (that was the practice ) it ment you were worth more to them than the silver . possibly  :)
ive heard of hammered love tokens but whats a bent worn hammered and whats a love token is the question?
 :)

Normally a love token would have 2 parallel bends in a sight V    at least all mine have.

Hello Mick.    well my oldest one is a Heny the 8th Groat, circ. 1509
the man would but a bend across one side and propose to his sweetheart,  if she excepted his proposal he'd then put another bend across the other side,  this was their Engagement Symble,  of coarse  they didn't have engagement rings back then.
The coin would then be kept in her purse for good luck.

ALSO   if they ever fell on hard times later and they needed money deperatley it would be straightened out to spend to help get them out of trouble,  the same as same couples have done with their rings in the past,
 Alan
