WHY IS IT THAT SOME PEOPLE CAN FIND ITEMS MORE EASILY THAN OTHERS. MUST BE A SECRET FORMULA?

No secret formula bobkoi, It's knowing the land (research) and knowing how to get the best out of your detector. :)

yeah, i agree, you have to get used to your detector and get to know it and what its saying,
 i used to go out with a couple of guys who changed their machines every six months to try and and get better than me, iv'e only got  a standard one too, my bold beachcomber used to be held togther with glue and tape  hee hee, but still done better than their better machines,
 he used to say, " beware of the man with the one detector thats held together with tape and glue,",  got it from a book somewhere on detecting,
they didn't give themselves a chance to get used to their machines properly, and didn't take notice of what it was telling them.  being tooo desperate instead of doing their own thing they were worried about what i was gettijng all the time,

Good advice there Al, although the one I have at the moment is straightforward to use I am still learning 15 months on, if I use different settings I make different finds. The longer you do detecting for the more those elusive finds are likely to turn up one day i.e. the amount of time you spend detecting= the finds you are likely to make.

Sound advice there guys and  I would add - need "the lady luck" on your side as well.

Huge amount of luck involved fella, the only way to increase your chances is go out more  ;)

You are right Rob and bonkoi - even with all the research in the world, good old Lady Luck plays a big part.  It's the law of numbers - the more times you get out, the more ground you cover, the higher the chance of finding something good.  With the most promising of sites - an Iron Age this, a Roman that and a Medieval something or other else, your detector head still has to go over the target, and the target has to be in depth range, for you to find it.
Keep going at it - the goodies will come.  :D
