Title: Three silver today whooohoooooooo (Now with pics) Doh!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on July 04, 2009, 06:47:02 PM
Picked up Ian Gadget today and went to my new farm , second visit to this farm,  the first being with Neil a couple of days ago. Quite quiet and the ground was like iron , digging was difficult at best. Ian came up with a silver , I'll let him tell you about it though. I picked up a name plaque , which unknown to me at the time was solid silver.

The ground being to hard to keep our interest we decided to shoot off to another farm, even though we'd done this farm many times previously we still felt it our best chance for some finds. We struggled for the first couple of hours with buttons and buttons and................... yip more buttons , then the heavens opened , several times and we got soaked....... several times. At one point i was lying under a hedge trying to keep the tector dry.  Last push we decided to detect back to the car, as I was under orders from a higher ranking member of my family  ;) . Halfway back I picked up a Thimble which although is squashed, is solid silver. And 10 yards from that I picked up another button signal (which I almost did not dig) And it turned out to be the Lizzy Half hammered. So all in all it turned out to be not a bad day at all

PS Is the hammered cut or broken ? Any ideas?

Well done Rob & Ian! :) :)

The hammie looks broken rather than cut Rob but you never know......

That very nice name plaque is worth following up "Mr Baker of New something House" I wonder what the history is behind it. ???

Just enlarged the name plaque and it looks like "Mrs Baker New Passage House"

Rob can you date it from the hallmark?

No hallmark on it fella ? But when i rubbed it with foil it fizzled and stank of rotten egg.

Well done Rob, mrs Baker must have been a wealthy lady, nice thimble too should straighten out a treat, nice busy area by the look of it and a hammy to finish doesn't get better than that!
Never found a watch winder with the gilding still on Ian, nice find!

Nice finds Rob. The Lizzie is broken rather then cut.

Could this be the "New Passage House" mentioned:

Ahhhh well done Peter , I did get some info on the house , and that would probably be the right house. Not a million miles from the farm  ;)

Thimble is now unsquished and nearly back to original shape. Thanks to Ian Gadget on quenching advice

    ;) Rob ;)

Great result lads - some decent finds there.

That name plaque is a bit special Rob - nice to be able to trace something and it doesn't come more accurate than having an adress on it! Well done.

Cheers
Neil

phil the quenching will only work on materials like copper silver.steel and iron are a different kettle of fish it depends on the carbon content usually quenching will harden these materials in this case you get it to a workable condition by heating it to cherry red and letting it cool naturally this process is called annealing.hope this helps pm me if you need more info.
