Title: Rams Head
Post by: wittsy1 on March 11, 2016, 10:31:14 AM
One of my permission fields has just been roughly ploughed, so yesterday I thought I would give it a go. It proved very difficult to walk on and detect, think I only lasted on there about half an hour but in that short time I came up with these 2 items.
The first is a Rams Head showing signs of Black Enamel, particularly on the horns. The back has a plate with remains of a pin, could it be a Zoomorphic Brooch, possibly Roman. What do you think chaps.
The second item is only 1" across but has that sort of Patina that says oldish, but I am not sure.

I hope the farmer is planning to rake this field out, love to give it a good bash.

Sorry about the pic quality, quite difficult to take photo of Rams head. It looks better in the hand.

Nice finds. Not roman, more like iron age! The second item is definitely an iron age pennanular brooch and the first item looks very much like one of those iron age bulls head bucket mounts. Is there any crop marks in the area to suggest there was a round house in the area? Good chance you could turn up a stater when the soils been broken down. Cracking finds there. Good luck with future searches.

Thank you for your replies all. @ Benny, there is a known Iron Age enclosure in the field which is not scheduled and has been ploughed through over the years so I guess your Iron Age suggestions are looking possible.
