Title: Crossbow Brooch
Post by: celticspikey on September 10, 2014, 07:19:34 PM
Back out today in the field I had the Celtic unit from, I spent 4 hours pacing up and down the field with just a roman grot (to embarrassing to show) :-[ :-[ and a few bits of lead, that was until the Deus banged out this little beauty it was not particularly deep and came up as shown with barely any soil attached. In 30 years of detecting this is my first Crossbow brooch :) although they are found widely and went well in to the 5th century this one is 3rd century. By the way just as a matter of interest in the searcher this month is an article on "Deus tricks & tips" by Adam Staples, I have loaded his HF recommended settings for my Deus and I got to say it doesn't half work, although it was not to far of my own settings I made up, I will now be using his ones, try them out Deus users. ;) ;) and yes I'm out tomorrow.

Back of the Net matey!

A rare and relatively valuable brooch to find.

Am I correct in thinking that these brooches are the one worn by legionnaires due to their size and thickness? Sure I read that somewhere.

Great find. Can you bring it for us to gawp at on the weekend?

Neil

A lovely find Paul well done, as Neil has said a relatively rare type too as it's not a true crossbow brooch but shows the transition between the "normal" T or Dolphin brooch and the later crossbow brooch before the influence of the P brooch.  ;) ;)

Cheers Neil, yes I think they were worn by legionnaires, unfortunately I'm not sure I can get to the 2 day rally, but if I can I will bring it, thanks also Geoff I was not aware it was that rare and unaware of its transition, thanks again ;)

There's no real evidence to back up the theory of them being legionary I think this was an idea put forward relating to the large 5th century versions that they must have been worn by a man but this was before archaeologists found out that the Saxon cruciform brooches, which are huge in comparison to even the largest Roman brooch, are almost uniquely female in use and like the Saxon the size probably reflects a change in fashion, from the Roman dress fastened at each shoulder by a small brooch to a larger brooch to hold a cloak or other heavy material ;)

I don't know about the 4 hours (I'm still building up my muscles again) but if I got home with a Roman brooch in that condition and nothing else, I'd be a very happy bunny. Would you believe I was over the Moon when I found a Spindle Whorl.
Once again, you're doing well Paul.  Great, keep it up. ;)

Very nice Paul ;) The bronze is in lovely condition, is that because its been tinned, or is the ground kind in that field? Do you think it had a iron pin?

A combination of good bronze Dale, also the Wiltshire flinty fields are always good to bronze :) and yes the brooch has signs of an iron pin now corroded.  ;)

You had problems Val ??? I'm sure you would be happy with the brooch .Spindle whorls are nice finds Val, I wish I could pop to your fields and scatter a bit of roman for you, I do feel a bit guilty showing some finds especially as others find it hard to find similar in their parts of the world. ;)

Thrombosis Paul but pretty well O.K. now except that muscles got soft from lack of use. Managed 3 hours on the beach with the Ultimate the other day so I reckon I'm getting there.
S'pose it would make you feel a little self conscious posting pics of all those lovely finds. It's all down to demographics I reckon.   I should have stayed up in the Midlands. :'(

Like a lot of people, Paul, I often think of the numerous times I drove past that field.  Only consolation I have is that I didn't detect back then.   Wish I'd taken it up years ago. But then I might have been tempted to stay up there.
