Title: Anchored to base
Post by: Christoph1945 on December 30, 2013, 11:47:23 AM
Have spent most of the last fourteen weeks cooking three meals a day and chasing the Dyson round the house, looking for dust deposits. Just before Christmas, just as the wife was starting to recover from a viral lung infection, she had a bad fall ( the third in a month ) and that has set her back considerably. Looks like I am now going to have to relearn my old washing and ironing skills!  :'(

Picked up the paper this morning and I see that the long range weather man says that we have got three major storms heading our way in the next week or so. With those guys predicting 90 ml/h winds; I am probably safer staying away from the beach at Talacre anyway!

Eddy The Eagle Edwards brought a smile to my face the other day, after he declared that he was to go ski jumping again. Following eye surgery, he no longer need those very thick glasses and said he was now a little concerned that he may be frightened of going down the ski run because he will be able to see where he is going.  ;D

Happy New Year to all you guys and gals

and make sure you keep your hard hats on for the next week or so!

                                                                                            Chris   :)

Thanks for all the good wishes folks; I should be crossing the border into that green and pleasant land in early March. Or God's own country, as Chris as so rightly named it!

Ta Richie,
between juggling the pots and pans at the kitchen sink, whilst trying not to burn the dinners, I have been surfing the internet for detecting information and came across a snippet that you may find useful.

It has been said that the fitting of a ferrite rfi / emi filter ( Choke ) to your detector cable, just before it enters the control box, may inhibit interference from overhead power cables, electric fences, mobile phones, and other detectors working close to you. I imagine that this could, possibly, be correct and have purchased a filter from Maplins and will give it a try asap. A filter from Maplins will set you back about £3.00 but they can be bought cheaper on the internet.
It clips round the detector cable and locks into place.

If I can get out to my permission later this week, I will test the idea in a field with an electric fence in it and then place feedback on this thread.  :)

Ah ha!
things are already picking up. Had the wife down to the doctors this morning and it was said that she may have cracked a rib or damaged her sternum in the heavy fall, but they no longer do anything for damaged ribcages. It should heal it's self with time! At least the long running chest infection has abated and her cough is gone. Had Margaret still been suffering from that  infernal cough when she fell and damaged her ribs; I can only imagine what pain she would have gone through.

She must be on the mend; she wants me to take her and her cousin to the Manchester United game on New Year's Day. Me, I will sit in the car and read whilst they watch the game.

Have a good New Year's Eve Keith and don't give your self a big hangover! I look forward to perhaps seeing you and Richie Sixpence on the beach in early March 2014.

                                                            Chris  :)

TB! That sounds nasty. I hear tell that TB is on it's way back in the UK. When I was working in Eastern Europe, in 1984, there was a big panic on and we were all sent for x-rays and TB booster shots.

Have a good New Year's Eve  "Uncle"  and happy hunting in 2014  ;)

Christoph1945.
Some good news there M8.
T.B. on its own is easier to cure these days with antibiotics.
But my mother and myself had surgery for it,she had a lung out,i had half a lung out.
Wish you and the missus All the best. :)
And good results when you get back into detecting. :)

Thanks Dancer, she is slowly picking up now and I was able to drive her and her cousin to the MU game today. Mind you, after the way MU played, I think they are both sorry that they went to match! They lost 2-1!  ::)

Just had a look at what the BBC weatherman says we can expect in our area tomorrow and it looks like we are going to have sunshine from dawn to dusk. With one of my permissions being just five miles away, I have decided to get up there and put in some time on a few acres of pasture. Planning on a three pronged attack, I'm going to take the EuroAce and my three coils; the standard DD, the small sniper, and my new Nel Tornado. With one of the fields having an electric fence that runs it's full length and some overhead power cables that extend across one end, I am going to fit a Ferrite RFI/EMI filter on the coil lead and see if it cuts out the interference.

The last time I was up there, the farmer's son showed me an area where he spread the dredging's from a small pond and some ditches. When I ran the detector and the standard DD over the area, it went wild but I wasn't sure if it was because the area was very trashy or if it was due to the electro magnetic interference. The sniper coil and the ferrite filter should help me resolve the problem with that section of field.

Oh my Gawd, eventually made it out this morning after making breakfast for the wife, getting the news papers, and running the Dyson over the living room carpet before setting off for my permission. The first two fields, close to the motorway, are under winter wheat; so I drove round to the farm and let them know that I had arrived to put in a couple of hours detecting. Couldn't get on the next two fields due to horses being in them. The only small fields that I could work today are very trashy and full of scrap. Managed 1 x 10p, 1 x 1p, two buttons, some strange odds and ends, plus a kg or two of scrap.

Gave up at lunch time and packed all the kit in the car ready to drive home; when the farmer came across to see what luck I may have had. I told him that I was thinking of asking his neighbour for permission and he said good idea.....this is the name of the guy that you need to speak to, tell him that you detect my land and you are ok by me! Drove round to the next property and sought out the named guy and introduced my self as a detectorists who was looking for permission to detect on his property. He greeted me like a long lost friend and despite being rather busy, took me and showed me his fields. That one is mine, that one is mine, this one and that one. We rotate the animals and there will always be fields that you will be able to detect on. Oh gosh, how many acres are we talking about? We have approximately one hundred and thirty acres of prime pasture for you to go at; when can we expect you make a start. You could have knocked me down with a feather!

Looks like our New Year is picking up; the wife won £25 on the Lotto and £3 on the Thunder Ball. Must be all due to your good wishes for us. Thanks guys.     :)

Thanks m8, and a happy New Year to you. I forgot to mention that the Mrs picked up almost £300 off the Irish Lotto last week. Pinch me someone, just in case I'm dreaming.   ::)
