Post by: GJH on May 03, 2013, 08:33:53 PM

 Could someone please tell me who's bust this is, I hope you can enlarge the image as I am not very good at photography, it's really clear on my camera.
 Thanks
 Geoff

Nice find Geoff, not quite big enough I'm afraid to see anything, can you get any closer or you can email me the original jpg and I'll crop it for you. Also it looks too big to be a minim :-\ you can put 3 minims on a 5p piece.

yes 8mm is a little on the large side for a true minim but there again I don't think there is much known about them or even if they were official, so it could well be. Address is;

It definitely looks like a barbarous roman of some type - I couldn't quite tell if the portrait had a beard or not. If it does it is 3rd century, if not most likely 4th century,

I think it's just a corroded Roman grot Geoff, by the time you put back the part of the head that's missing then a legend around the rim your nearly up to twice the size :-\

 Thanks Geoff, I have looked everywhere for identity of the bust but can't  find it, also if you turn the reverse of the coin upside down there is a what could be a horse.
 Thanks again
 Geoff

Any chance it may be a HONORIUS 393 - 432 ?

It's definitely barbarous.

I'd say 4th century. If it has a horse on the reverse (can't really tell) then it would be copying the 'FEL TEMP REPARATIO' series of Constantius II, but obviously minim sized (so after 348AD).
