Title: A Couple More
Post by: Val Beechey on March 30, 2013, 09:31:19 PM
Just a couple more of the bits I've winkled from my highly mineralised fields.
The Biggest Horse shoe I've ever seen and the nicest button. It can't be too old as the Company that made it Pitt & Co. ceased in 1973. As far as I can see they made Military and bespoke only. This one has Gothic letters S P D on the front, seems to be good quality metal but not sure exactly what.
Oh and a Flint core.

All in all I'd say the fields are interesting but not very productive and B hard work. Be glad when I've had enough.

Val

Hi Val,
           nice to see a full horseshoe; I frequently find half horseshoes!  ???

Do you want a few ? ::)
 I used to dig them regular. I only dug that one because the signal said it was something other than iron and the hole was already 1 1/2 spade lengths down.
Turned out to be a major excavation in the end because the shoe was lying flat . Just goes to show how bored I was. ::)

Hi Val,
            strange isn't it? I often get good signals on my EuroAce, only to find that it's an iron object covered in rust. Turns out to be good exercise though!  :P

I think it's something all machines suffer from Chris. Horse shoes, washers, various stages of degraded iron, twisted items and different angles in the soil. All these can change the signal from true to iffy and anything in between.
All part of the fun of digging. Your never know what you're going to get. ;D

Hi Chris and Val after getting a good signal it is such disappointing to have rusty objects appear in a hole but its just part of the game I guess  ;D But if you don't dig it you could be missing something good  ;D

Sounds like you might be finding Ox shoes rather than horseshoes.

For anyone who's interested I've just identified my button.  The letters were S P H  not D as I thought in the first place.

Easy peezy once you know.  South Pembrokeshire Hunt.  nice to I.D one for a change. ;D
