Hi Mat, Depends which side of the beach you are and on low water.
The bottom end of the beach (works side) tends to hold a lot of trash, but dont right it off as detecting around the jack stones on low water does throw up some good stuff but loaded with trash.
The middle of the beach is a lot quieter (Opposite the park), trash is going to be the same, but good if you have had a storm which leaves troughs midway down the beach towards low water.
Top end of the beach is lower on trash, but what trash you do find is bloody large. Dont bother to do the lower dunes so full of trash you will be digging all day for a small amount of pre decimal.
Best area is way up towards the estuary.
Having said all that beaches change daily especially after storms, I have found some good stuff midway up the beach.
 But one warning beware of BADGERS!!!

lol yeah alun watch out badgers about. aber got loads of pipes,4ft pieces of railway track,millions of bullets and shrapnel.they blew a ship up there years ago so bits of scrap all over.this said i have had wedding rings of every section of the beach from the pier all the way down to the estuary so dont be put off there is gold there.if your hitting loads of heavy weights the gold aint much deeper.im goin there tomorrow if your out. ;)

I think a lot of the large signals across most local beaches, Barry, Aberavon are the remains of wartime beach defences put up during the war to prevent enemy forces landing on them. They consisted of railway type rails set in the sand right across the beach and if the sand is off especially on Barry  you can see small stumps of them sticking up right across the beach. That's the time to find the heavy gold rings as they sit on the hard pack gravel !!!!  I can remember going on one of the Porthcawl beaches on New Years day many years ago and picking up coins etc. lying on the mud hardpack amongst the cut pieces of railway sleeper left behind.

I remember an elderly gent telling me the same thing about his Dad at Saundersfoot.  I myself have seen the sand virtually disappear from one small bay by Pendine after a storm. All the WW11 concrete anti-tank blocks, the remains of a boat and gangway were visible. Bearing in mind the iron pilings were standing approx. 3 + feet out of the beach gives you some idea how much sand is there normally when you can't see these things.

Totally agree Val and Pat, they change on every tide. I try to get on my pasture permissions if the weather allows me, but if not i then attack the beaches. Its not that i dont like doing beach work, I love the research and land structures to hunt on. Mind you my luck is low right now but its still a good day out.
Have you tried the small bay right next to the harbour and in front of the old fair ground Mathew, there is a load of junk there as is every where, but i managed to winkle a nice gold ring and a broken gold chain from there on a real low tide. And the spring ones are on their way.
Thanks for the offer Badger,, off up the mountain again. Might be calling on a few of your guys in a few weeks, the area is way to big to cover before machines begin to set up the wind farm, and there is a possible old small medieval settlement on the edge of it. I have swung the area bellow it so much my arm is getting loose.  :o
