Title: Two little mongrels Post by: Techony on April 05, 2012, 05:27:14 PM Out today to see if the rain had improved the signals on the drying stubble. Still pretty quiet but these two little mongrels showed their faces even though they tried to confuse the Deus by cloaking the signals.
I'm a bit confused by the James Groat though. James I of England was after all James VI of Scotland and here we are with an Irish Groat! I say groat because it's smaller than the English Sixpence and larger than the English Halfgroat, can't find a picture of the full groat to compare to though. As for the Henry, he's always been on my wishlist, and here he is coming up bent by 90 degrees with a very corroded crease, very worn and very dirty, ...bad lad. It's a Sixpence.......the way to tell on Irish coins is the legend. On your coin it states Scotland, this means it is from the first coinage and the only Irish coins under James were Sixpences and Shillings. The later coinage recognised the union of the two kingdoms and just has Great Britain on them. They were both only 75% of the weight of the English equivalent. Ahah, that explains it all, Thanks Geoff. I should've known that the Irish Scottish Sixpence was only 4 1/2 pence worth ;D ;D Judging by the duckmark, I make it a 1604 version then ???
