Now that looks a good days digging, now you have cleared a lot of the junk out, get back on there slow and low. You'll be surprised what will come up.

1 or 2 nice finds there Deadlock, well done.
Hate to show my ignorance but when did bag seals stop being used ??  That is a bag seal, isn't it ?  Are my glasses playing up again or is that plastic string attached to it. :-\

I couldn't swear that they're not still used :-\ but I have a Fisons version dated between 1931 and 1947 so not that long ago.

Trouble is we tend to group them all together but there are many different uses, seeds, fertilizer (chemical or guano), flax, cotton and they probably date from different times.

Thanks Geoff. Maybe a little revision is called for. Something for me to do to ease the boredom. ::)

Well, after a very short recci on the internet, I have surprised myself.  Lead seals have never gone out of production. They are still being made today for things like cables, drugs cabinets, etc. Reminded me that there was one on the mains cable in the meter box.
No wonder we find so many.

Out again yesterday, apart from a few buttons and a trade weight i found the objects on these pics i think one is some kind of pendant you can just make out an old enamel pattern and the other i think may be an old saxon or celtic coin (just wishing i think) ;D

more likely to be a 4th century roman grot

Sorry to put a dampener on picci 1. but It reminds me of a multi spanner we found in Grandads shed after he died.
It was flat with multi sized facets. :(

Does remind me of the spanner, but that coin if for reference is a bit large in that case, is that a 5p for size reference ?

I can see a diamond pattern on the right hand side, could be part of a decorated fitment of some kind, but I think it will be destined to become one of those unknown bits of stuff in the icecream tub of doom as a holding place before it eventually gets the trip to its final resting place. I've got a nice collection of similar objects in my tub ;D

Its a 10p reference!!!!! ;D

I'm with Alan on the coin, Roman grot from the late 3rdC. (Saxon or Celtic bronze isn't even worth considering around these parts)  and as Da Monkey has said the fitting will probably remain a mystery item. Just a hint for future reference, if using a coin as a size scale use either a 5p or show the reverse rather than the obverse ;)
